As first reported by the New York Times, the nets have already saved lives and have failed to deter jumpers.

The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District began constructing the $217 million steel nets in 2018. At more than three miles in length, the nets “are stitched between 369 new struts, 50 feet apart, and painted the same International Orange as the bridge itself,” according to the Times.

The district estimates that 30 people or more die from suicide at the bridge each year and that hundreds more are stopped from harming themselves through law enforcement and public intervention.

On its website, the district says “jumping into the (net) will result in significant bruises, sprains and possibly broken bones.”

If you or someone you know is struggling with feelings of depression or suicidal thoughts, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers free, round-the-clock support, information and resources for help. Reach the lifeline at 800-273-8255 or see the SuicidePreventionLifeline.org website.

We asked our photographers to pick their favorite images from October 2023, and here are some they selected.

People at the OC Parks at the nature center in Caspers Wilderness Park in San Juan Capistrano joined the rest of Orange County as they looked to the sky early Saturday morning, October 14, 2023, during the annular ring of fire solar eclipse. At the height of the eclipse, the moon covered approximately 70 percent of the sun’s surface. It was the most coverage of the solar surface in an eclipse visible in Southern California until 2045.

In Santa Ana, students at Orange County School of the Arts showed off their pumpkin creations as part of OCSA’s Annual Painted Pumpkin Auction.

Over in Tustin, visitors came out for the 66th Annual Tustin Tiller Days at Columbus Tustin Park. The three-day event, held since 1957, celebrates Orange County’s agricultural heritage.

SeaCoast Grace Church in Cypress was host to funeral services for Manhattan Beach police officer Chad Swanson, 35, a 13-year veteran, who died in a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound 405 Freeway in the Carson area earlier this month. Swanson was married with three sons.

In Irvine, Julia Heiman was overcome with emotion as she held posters of two girls being held hostage by Hamas during a vigil at the corner of Alton Parkway and Culver Drive, in support of the more than 200 people who were kidnapped in Israel earlier this month. “It’s so painful to me that Israel has to defend its right to defend itself and to think of the brutality of what the children have endured,” said Heiman.

At Christ Cathedral, mourners came together to remember Bishop Tod D. Brown. Brown led the Diocese of Orange for 14 years.

October ended with Halloween, as it always does – there was a dog parade in Huntington Beach, folks in Laguna Woods held their annual decorated golf cart parade, Orange County School of the Arts had a costume contest and flash mob dance, and Fountain Valley Regional Hospital Pediatric Halloween Parade with rescued dog Hazel the Hobbler.

Check out the photos and follow The Orange County Register on Facebook and Instagram. Here are our staff photographers’ individual pages: Paul Bersebach, Jeff Gritchen, Leonard Ortiz, Mark Rightmire, and Mindy Schauer.

A La Cañada Flintridge mid-century home renovated by owner Annie Segal, daughter of late Los Angeles tastemaker Fred Segal, is on the market for $3.995 million.

The list price is 78% more than the $2.25 million she paid for the property in June 2022, records show.

Although the listing at the time suggested the 1958 build only needed “a little TLC,” Annie Segal, backed by ASOM Home, the renovation firm she owns with design partner Marieke Ochtman, spent a year preserving the architectural integrity while also updating it.

The centerpiece of the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home is the living room with a vaulted wood-beam ceiling and floor-to-roofline windows that bring the outdoors in. They also frame the wooded surroundings of this three-quarter-acre-plus lot on a quiet street.

“This is a very hot neighborhood close to everything but feels remote and peaceful,” said Rob Kallick of Compass, the co-listing agent.

In designing the residence, ASOM Home’s’ design team took inspiration from “the surrounding elements of nature and the flow and energy that was felt throughout the space,” Annie Segal said.

That included streamlining and opening the kitchen up to the great room with its circular fireplace and built-in storage bench. Glass sliders lead to a wood deck and grassy area outdoors.

The primary suite offers access to the backyard from the bedroom and bathroom, with its modern freestanding tub and separate shower. It also has a walk-in closet with plenty of storage space.

Mary Regal, also of Compass, shares the listing.

Annie Segal is one of Fred Segal’s five children. Her father, who died in February 2021 at 87, left behind a retail legacy that defined “California cool” for 60 years. Annie Segal once ran Fred Segal Originals, but now, in addition to ASOM Home, owns the children’s clothing boutique The Reckless Unicorn with her husband, Derek Reckley.

The two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships got underway with a Future Stars Friday card that featured five races for 2-year-old horses at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia.

Big Evs kicked off the day’s five races for 2-year-olds with a half-length victory over Valiant Force in the $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint, Fierceness shook off a bad outing last month to win the $2 million Juvenile, Unquestionable won the $1 million Juvenile Turf and Just FYI upset Tamara and extended her unbeaten streak to three with a 7-1 win in the $2 million Juvenile Fillies.

Trainer Chad Brown continued his dominance of the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf with his sixth win in the race as 9-1 shot Hard to Justify dug in for a half-length victory over Ireland-bred Porta Fortuna. It was Brown’s 17th Cup win.

Friday’s on-track attendance was 43,377.

Racing resumes Saturday with nine more Breeders’ Cup races, including the $6 million Classic. For the consensus picks for those races, click here.

They started their season in borrowed volleyball uniforms with only three weeks of practice. A few months later, they finished their season losing by just two points to the No.1-ranked team in their bracket.

It’s not groundbreaking to see a girl playing football, but this school year they had their own CIF-sanctioned sport: Flag football. Dozens of teams formed in the state for the inaugural season that ended a week ago.

At Los Alamitos High School, the pressure to start a team came from their future quarterback, Rylee Robles, who said she was watching the boys practice and wanted to play football in high school.

Robles is no stranger to football, she’s been playing in Friday Night Lights, a youth flag football league, for a few years.

When she heard CIF officials were considering making it an official high school sport, she said she took action talking with school officials and posted flyers around campus. She was able to drum up enough interest to assemble a team and hire a coach.

The games are quick, with two 20-minute halves with a running clock and a five-minute halftime. Touchdowns are six points, but there is no kicking. The point after a touchdown is either a 1- or 2-point conversion based on the distance the team chooses.

The historic nature of the inaugural season wasn’t lost on Robles. Throughout the season, Robles said she thought, “Oh my gosh that was the first touchdown, that was the first flag pull.” It was small moments, she said, that gave her, “a real big perspective of this being the first time.”

Head Coach Laura Hart said, “The competitiveness of the level play has increased now that it’s an actual CIF sport … and it’s gonna increase as the years go on.”

Hart said she is pleased with the progress the team made throughout the season. And, after the season-ending 2 point loss, she told the team, “hold your head high because you played at a high level the whole time.”

A Laguna Beach storybook-style cottage once owned by the late artist Virginia Woolley, a co-founder of the annual juried Festival of Arts, is on the market for $4.35 million.

The list price is more than double the $2.075 million paid by the current owner in August 2022 but reflects what the listing describes as a “comprehensive and creative remodel.”

Spanning 1,256 square feet, the house features three bedrooms and three bathrooms, including a Jack and Jill bathroom connecting the two downstairs bedrooms.

Co-listing agent Nick Hooper of Compass said the current owners have “masterfully kept the historic feel while updating for living today.”

Designed to optimize space and natural light, the interior boasts custom glass doors and original stained glass.

The great room, which combines the living and dining areas and has a window seat, features a vaulted wood-beamed ceiling and a fireplace as its focal point. The ceiling and walls are white except for the archways and walls of the primary living space, which are lined with brickwork of different shades.

A dining area leads into the kitchen, updated with contrasting black stone countertops and stainless-steel appliances.

Up the narrow staircase lies the primary bedroom. It has an attached deck with ocean views, a vintage soaking tub in the ensuite bathroom and closet space.

There’s also a small office area.

Outside, pruned hedges and an arbor enclose the front patio and garden area for entertaining.

A one-car garage with tiled flooring and finished walls rounds out the offering.

The property is on the city’s historic registry with a build date of 1930. According to Senior Planner Chris Dominguez, it is pending approval for a Mills Act contract from the City Council later this month.

Mike Johnson of Compass shares the listing.

Woolley hailed from the American South. She studied art in Chicago and Paris in the early 20th century. In 1923, she left Atlanta and settled in Laguna Beach, where she taught outdoor art classes and served as the curator at the Art Gallery. She helped launch the Festival of Arts in 1932 and participated actively until her death. She died in February 1971 at 86.

A San Juan Capistrano home owned by Anthony Trimino, the ad agency CEO who ran in the 2021 California governor recall election, has relisted for $6.495 million.

The asking price is 21% higher than the $5.385 million the one-time gubernatorial hopeful and his wife, Jennifer, paid for the property in December 2021, records show. According to county documents, the couple bought the house from Jim Bellino of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” fame.

MLS records show the Triminos originally listed the home in March for $6.995 million, removed it in September and then relisted it on Oct. 19 at the current asking price.

Sited on a 1-acre lot in the guard-gated Hunt Club neighborhood, the 6,082-square-foot classical-style house with an imposing columned entry dates to 1986 and recently underwent a two-year renovation. It has a double-height foyer with twin semi-circular staircases, six bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

A frameless glass door leads to the all-white living room with a fireplace and illuminated built-ins.

In the formal dining room, there’s a custom ceiling and an expensive built-in buffet with a wine refrigerator.

The great room seamlessly connects to the gourmet kitchen, anchored by a waterfall-style island. Its stainless-steel appliances include a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator and a six-burner Wolf range. A fireplace warms the breakfast nook.

There are two offices, including one accessible by a staircase.

The upstairs primary suite features a built-in wine refrigerator, a freestanding tub and a luxurious steam shower with Accoya wood and book-matched slabs of stone. A deck offers scenic views of the surrounding hills.

Designed for large gatherings, the backyard boasts resort-style amenities such as a pool and spa with water accents and an electric cover, a pickleball and basketball court, a putting green and an outdoor kitchen equipped with a pizza oven and a grill.

Tim Smith and Jeff Golden of Coldwell Banker Realty hold the listing.

Trimino, 48, is president and CEO of Traffik, an Irvine-based advertising agency. He was among the list of Republican candidates who hoped but ultimately failed to oust Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in a special recall election in 2021.

In 2022, the incumbent governor was re-elected for a second term.

Los Angeles Kings captain Anze Kopitar has listed his modern smart home on a pedestrian-only road in Manhattan Beach for $37 million.

Sited on a double lot, the 7,604-square-foot residence has a main house and a separate guest house for a total of seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. There’s a disappearing pool and spa powered by AKVO Spiralift technology.

The floors lift and lower at the touch of a button to create a courtyard terrace for entertaining or adjust the pool and spa depth without displacing any water. A Lynx kitchen with a pizza oven and two barbecues adds to outdoor amenities.

Records show the two-time Stanley Cup winner and his wife, Ines, bought two neighboring homes in November 2014 for a combined $10 million. The couple replaced the dated structures with this luxury beach compound in 2018.

Now it claims the all-time highest list price in Manhattan Beach.

Tall hedges offer privacy from prying eyes while ocean views abound from different vantage points, including the main house’s two upstairs patios designed for barbeques and relaxing by the outdoor fireplace on dual suspended swing sofas.

The interior has five bedrooms, seven bathrooms and dedicated rooms for movie watching, exercise and office work.

Other amenities include a gourmet kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances, climate-controlled wine storage and a four-stop elevator.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom guest house has a rooftop deck, plus a poolside bathroom with a shower.

There’s parking for five cars.

Solar panels, Tesla Power Walls and Lutron automatic shades contribute to the efficiency of the home.

June Emerson of Vista Sotheby’s International Realty has the listing.

Slovenia-born Kopitar, 36, captains the LA Kings. The 6-foot-3-inch center got his start with the club in 2007 and is considered “an idol for everybody. An icon,” teammate Kevin Fiala said in a press conference as reported Oct. 20 by the Southern California News Group.

By Oct. 21, he will have become the team’s leader in games played when the Kings take on the Boston Bruins at Crypto.com Arena.

$55 million is the lowest price among these 7 homes for sale in Orange County https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/20/50-million-and-more-orange-county-reaches-for-ultra-luxury-housing-market/ Fri, 20 Oct 2023 17:30:28 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9625975&preview=true&preview_id=9625975 When it comes to ultra-luxury real estate, the top 1% are prioritizing safety, lifestyle and climate over big city attractions.

They’re finding those amenities in coastal Orange County, real estate professionals say.

“I believe all eyes in the world are on Orange County because it’s a little bubble,” says Tim Smith of Coldwell Banker Realty.

With the Pacific Ocean as its backdrop, coastal OC stands at the forefront of an ultra-luxury explosion. This sought-after “bubble” tucked in safe Southern California suburbs has homes, many recent or new builds, coming on the market in excess of $10 million.

Steven Thomas, chief economist at Reports on Housing, put the number at 528. But these $10 million-plus homes aren’t selling overnight.

According to Thomas, the market time is 59 months or a month shy of 5 years.

With so few forced sales, prices tend to stick, especially among newer construction. OC’s most expensive listing is a 2021-built Crystal Cove estate in Newport Coast. The property has sought $69.8 million since June 2021.

“Luxury owners dial in their price and then stick with it for a very long time,” Thomas says. “They may adjust the price a bit, but most state that they really “do not have to sell.”

Compared with other ultra-luxury hotspots, coastal OC is undervalued and has room to grow.

In recent years, the county has seen record-breaking sales across its coastal cities. The $70 million record set in 2021 when hedge fund manager Joseph Edelman bought a 1-acre Laguna Beach estate remains the all-time most expensive house sold in the county.

That bested the previous records set in 2020 when LoanDepot CEO Anthony Hsieh bought a $61 million Crystal Cove estate and “Undercover Billionaire” star Glenn Stearns bought best-selling author Dean Koontz’s 2.5-acre Newport Coast compound for $50 million.

“We’ve only started to scratch the surface on really, really ultra-luxury $100 million-plus,” Smith said. “Historically, nobody has built properties to meet that demand, but over the next three to five years, I think you’ll see the best sales in the United States here in Orange County because you’re starting to see people build homes that will fetch those prices.”

Here are the most expensive homes currently on sale in coastal Orange County for more than $50 million. Newport Beach has the most with six, and there’s one in Dana Point.

$69.8 million: Newport Coast

Size: 15,500 square feet with seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms

The house: This three-story Palladian-style home, the creation of furnishings entrepreneur Michael Amini, was completed in 2021 on a half-acre lot in Crystal Cove.

Amini spared no expense on the house.

The foyer boasts two staircases and a Swarovski crystal-encrusted glass dome called “The Eye of the Phoenix,” which he designed in collaboration with Judson Studios. There are custom chandeliers, white Jordanian marble floors and floor-to-ceiling onyx walls in the living space. The stairway railings, door handles and hinges, as well as other hardware, are coated in 24-karat gold.

An ocean-view library, formal and informal living rooms with white oak floors, a formal dining room with an expansive wine cellar, and two kitchens complete the first floor.

The listing describes a primary suite with a kitchenette, two spa-inspired bathrooms featuring heated marble floors, and two walk-in closets “reminiscent of the finest luxury department stores.”

An underground level holds a state-of-the-art theater, glass pool table, bar and fully equipped gym. A spa features hand-carved onyx artwork and a massage room with a steam shower and dry and wet saunas.

There is a climate-controlled 3,725-square-foot garage with granite floors and a turntable that holds 10 cars. Equipped for light and smoke shows, it doubles as an event space.

The mosaic pool and spa dubbed “Sunrise to Sunset” is the creation of United Kingdom-based artisans. Decks, loggias, sculpture gardens and seating and dining vignettes with views round out the offering.

$64 million: Newport Beach

Size: 3,600 square feet with six bedrooms and five bathrooms

The property has been passed down through three generations of the same family since 1951. Although the family has maintained it, the listing markets it as an opportunity to restore, expand or reimagine it, as many of the 29 homes on this high-priced island enclave have done.

In September, the owners dropped the initial $74 million asking price by $10 million “to better align their listing price with the market,” co-listing agent Steve High of Coldwell Banker told Southern California News Group at the time.

An oceanfront compound on the westernmost point of Palos Verdes Estates is on the market for $35 million.

If it gets close to the asking price, it will surpass the Andalusian-style home in the guard-gated city of Rolling Hills purchased for $22.4 million in October 2018 as the Palos Verdes Peninsula’s most expensive house ever sold.

Located in the quiet enclave of Lunada Bay, the recent listing features two Santa Barbara Spanish-style homes for a total of 12,474 square feet with seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms.

A pool and spa marry two properties combined to create the lush, 1-acre-plus grounds, backdropped with unobstructed coastline views from Redondo Beach to Malibu.

Palos Verdes Estates is one of four cities on the peninsula that Britt Austin of Vista Sotheby’s International Realty calls a best-kept secret.

“In Palos Verdes Estates and Rolling Hills, which is a guard-gated city, you get some really big lots,” said Austin, the co-listing agent. “It’s a beautiful place. I don’t know why prices are (undervalued), but I think that will change.”

Records show the first of the two properties sold in July 2007 for $4.9 million to a trust managed by Tim Armour, the outgoing chairman and CEO of the Capital Group, who retires October 25 after 40 years with the financial services company.

When the neighboring house came on the market, records show the same trust scooped it up in March 2011 for $4.5 million.

Each of those times, the owner replaced the original home with a new two-story construction, first in 2008 and then in 2016. They include a 7,022-square-foot main house and a 5,450-square-foot guest house with an entertainment pavilion, each curated by celebrated interior designer Tim Clarke.

His touches include reclaimed wood-beamed ceilings, vintage Italian chandeliers and antique French fireplace mantles.

At the five-bedroom main house, the front door opens to reveal the living room with a fireplace and built-ins.

It leads to the formal dining room, which connects to the eat-in kitchen and breakfast room via the butler’s pantry. Design elements in the kitchen include countertops of aged Massangis limestone, a patinaed copper sink and high-end appliances and fixtures.

The kitchen overlooks the family room where disappearing glass walls extend the interior to expansive grounds by landscape architect Art Luna that feature sprawling lawns, limestone hardscape and pergolas.

Elsewhere, there’s a home office, screening room and primary suite with direct access to an outdoor spa. It also boasts a fireplace in the bedroom, a separate shower and tub in the bathroom, and a walk-in closet with floor-to-ceiling built-in storage and an island.

The guest retreat includes two bedrooms, a 1,200-bottle wine cellar, a gym, an office and an expansive family room referred to in the listing as the entertainment pavilion with retractable glass walls.

Garage parking for seven rounds out the highlights.

More than well-appointed, the listing also boasts Savant home automation and next-level security. While the designer furniture and home furnishings are not included in the price, they are available for purchase outside escrow.

Austin shares the listing with her mother, Cari Corbalis, also of Vista Sotheby’s International Realty.
