Adrian Muñoz, 34 years old, was suspended on Tuesday and charged with one felony count of grand theft of property and one misdemeanor count of petty theft of property. The exact value of what he stole was not clear.

Authorities say surveillance footage caught Muñoz stealing a gold crucifix chain from a man who had died of a heart attack on the job at a warehouse in South Los Angeles on Jan. 6.

Investigators later searched Muñoz’s cubicle and discovered rare antique coins and a receipt belonging to a man who died on Nov. 12, 2022. His death investigation had been handled by Muñoz.

The District Attorney’s Office said that Muñoz had been an employee of the department since 2018.

An investigation is underway to find out if there are more victims, Gascón said.

An arraignment hearing will be set at a later time.

Man arrested on suspicion of murder at Huntington Beach home https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/07/arizona-man-arrested-on-suspicion-of-murder-at-huntington-beach-home/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 17:37:56 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9659700&preview=true&preview_id=9659700 An Arizona man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman who was found in a car trunk in Huntington Beach, authorities said on Tuesday.

On Monday, Nov. 6, the Holbrook, Arizona Police Department reported 54-year-old Christi Lynn Romero and her car missing from her residence in Holbrook, according to a press release from the department.

Police began searching for her “estranged boyfriend,” 34-year-old Holbrook resident Richard Paul Rodriguez. Rodriguez had been served with a protective order and removed from Romero’s residence days earlier.

Officers from the Huntington Beach Police Department were sent to the 17000 block of Friml Lane at about 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6 for a call about a family disturbance.

Officers found a dead woman in the trunk of a car at the scene. The woman, according to the Holbrook Police Department, was confirmed to be Romero by the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Rodriguez was arrested by the Huntington Beach Police Department and booked on suspicion of murder.

“The investigation into this incident is still ongoing, and no further details will be released at this time,” police said.

Some stolen items returned in Rose Bowl locker room theft case, police say https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/03/some-stolen-items-returned-in-rose-bowl-locker-room-theft-case-police-say/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 01:56:03 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9654419&preview=true&preview_id=9654419 Several items stolen from Colorado Buffaloes players in their locker room at the Rose Bowl during the UCLA-Buffaloes game on Saturday, Oct. 28 have been returned, but the investigation continues, Pasadena police said Friday, Nov. 3.

They also said the suspects in the case are juveniles.

“Additional items of interest have been identified and are actively being pursued,” Pasadena city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said..

After the game on Sunday, a group of Buffaloes players said some of their possessions, including jewelry, had been pilfered.

One person said a chain he recently bought was missing. “I just got mine, bro. I had the jewelry box and everything. They took it out of my jewelry box,” he said in a video on YouTube.

Colorado safety Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig posted in all caps on X: “In locker room you would think your stuff safe man its crazy.”

On Friday, police officers executed at least one search warrant at an undisclosed location, where some items were recovered.

The investigation was boosted by calls from the public tipping officers to the location of the goods, Derderian said. But she could not say specifically what was recovered, or the monetary value.

As of Friday evening, it also was unclear how many items were returned, and exactly what information that was provided to police led them to the suspects.

Derderian did say no one was currently in custody.

The players discovered their items were taken when they returned to the locker room after the Saturday game, which UCLA won, 28-16.

3 suspects could face life in prison for Southern California robbery spree, fatal car crash https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/02/3-socal-residents-could-face-life-in-prison-for-armed-robbery-spree-and-fatal-car-crash/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 00:44:40 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9652400&preview=true&preview_id=9652400 Three Southern California residents are facing federal charges for their alleged involvement in three armed robberies and a car accident which killed a bystander, federal authorities announced Thursday.

Kaelenn Maea, a 26-year-old Long Beach resident, 30-year-old Carson resident Salagi Iakopo, and 23-year-old Placentia resident Mathew Salanoa were charged with armed robbery and carrying a firearm during a violent crime in a complaint filed on Wednesday.

Court documents allege that the trio committed three armed robberies in Downey, Compton and South El Monte between Sept. 22 and Sept. 29.

Authorities say that on Sept. 27 the three robbed a gas station in Compton, detached the cash register from the counter, pointed a rifle at the cashier and customers and made off with roughly $1,500 before fleeing the scene in a stolen Range Rover.

Two days later, authorities found that Maea and Iakopo robbed a convenience store in El Monte. One of them allegedly pointed a rifle at the cashier while the others stole around $400 from the cash register before the group fled the scene in the same stolen Range Rover.

On Oct. 9, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies found the Range Rover, which sped away. The vehicle hit another car, killing an innocent driver. The suspects fled the scene. Deputies found clothing and personal items potentially belonging to Maea inside the vehicle.

Maea and Salanoa were caught and they are expected to appear in court Thursday afternoon. Law enforcement is still searching for Iakopo.

If convicted, each defendant faces up to 20 years in federal prison for the robbery count, and potentially life in prison for the firearm count.

First significant Santa Ana winds of the season expected to start Saturday night https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/26/santa-ana-winds-to-blow-through-southern-california-sunday-monday/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 00:15:20 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9639703&preview=true&preview_id=9639703 The first significant Santa Ana winds of the season, along with dry conditions spelling heightened wildfire danger, are forecast for Southern California starting Saturday night and likely will continue into early next week, according to the National Weather Service.

The gusts could reach 60 mph in parts of Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire.

The windy conditions are expected to primarily affect the northern portion of Los Angeles County, enveloping the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel Valleys, along with the Malibu coast, Santa Monica Mountains, Calabasas, the San Gabriel Mountains and the 5 and 14 Freeway corridors.

Red flag warnings indicating critical fire danger conditions will be in place for those areas from 3 a.m. Sunday through 10 p.m. Monday, although the winds are expected to kick up starting Saturday evening.

The NWS also posted a high wind watch for the Inland Empire beginning at 3 a.m. Sunday and ending at 10 p.m. Monday, though meteorologists remain undecided as to when the northeasterly winds will subside.

In Orange County, high wind warnings will be in place from 11 p.m. Saturday through 10 p.m. Monday in the Santa Ana Mountains and foothills and inland areas, with 20 to 30 mph winds anticipated and isolated gusts of up to 70 mph. OC coastal areas will be under a less-severe wind advisory, with winds gusting up to 45 mph.

The NWS said that a surface ridge of high pressure will anchor over the Great Basin in Nevada and Utah, moving in behind a low-pressure system as it exits eastward, ushering in the Santa Anas and lower humidity.

Forecasters said humidity dropping to 5% will mean bone-dry conditions across the inland region.

“For Saturday night through Tuesday, there will be elevated fire weather conditions, with periods of critical fire weather,” the weather service stated.

“In terms of fires, avoid activities that could create a spark,” NWS forecaster Stefanie Sullivan said. “Don’t park on top of grass if you have to pull over, because the heat from your exhaust could ignite a fire.”

The agency predicted winds averaging between 20 mph and 30 mph, with gusts of 55 to 60 mph possible in some locations. Mountains and passes, including the San Gorgonio Pass between Banning and Whitewater, will be on the receiving end of the most intense gusts, according to the NWS.

“Strong winds could damage trees and other objects,” the agency said. “Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.”

Although the high wind watch currently ends on Monday night, the NWS said it’s possible strong easterly winds would continue going into Wednesday.

“Overall, this is a moderate event, but it’s definitely the strongest one of the season so far,” Sullivan said on Thursday. “The other ones were so weak I wouldn’t even classify them as Santa Anas.

High temperatures in Southern California metropolitan areas are expected to peak in the mid-70s over the weekend, with overnight lows in the low 50s.

Southern California Edison may turn off power to customers in high-wind, fire-prone areas. As of Friday afternoon, there were 150,240 customers under consideration for shut-offs. Find real-time updates at sce.com/psps.

SCE offers these tips:

  • Check emergency supplies and have a battery-operated radio, flashlight and fresh batteries available.
  • Secure any temporary structures in backyards or businesses, including backyard furniture and tents.
  • Don’t touch downed power lines, and call 911.
  • Don’t try to remove a broken tree limb that has come in contact with a power line.
  • Treat crossings as four-way stops at intersections where traffic signals are out.
  • If a power line falls on a vehicle, remain inside the vehicle and call 911.
  • Use flashlights at home rather than candles.
  • For people using a generator, place it outdoors and plug appliances directly into it, using a heavy-duty extension cord.
  • Do not use any equipment inside that is designed for outdoor heating or cooking, to avoid the possible emission of carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.

Thousands marched from the Israeli Consulate in West Los Angeles to the Federal Building in Westwood on Saturday, Oct. 14, forcing the temporary shutdown of part of the 405 Freeway as demonstrators called for Palestinian rights and Israel prepared for a large-scale, coordinated attack against Hamas in the Gaza strip.

The protesters joined planned demonstrations in other U.S. cities calling for the liberation of Gaza and of Palestinians.

As local protesters held up signs demanding to “free Palestine” and chanted “Israel, Israel you can’t hide,” Palestinians in Gaza struggled Saturday to flee from areas of their city targeted by the Israeli military. They were grappling with a growing water and medical supply shortage ahead of the expected land offensive a week after Hamas’ bloody, wide-ranging attack into Israel targeting civilians.

From the consulate, Saturday’s demonstration – dubbed “Rally for Return: ALL OUT FOR GAZA” — became a march to the Federal Building, with thousands filling Wilshire Boulevard and holding up Palestinian flags.

While the violence this week represents a new war in a region that has seen many, their demand was the same as it has been for generations — to free the Palestinian Territories from what the United Nations considers Israeli occupation, despite Israel’s claim otherwise.

Hussam Ayloush, CEO of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, better known as CAIR – pointed to that history, as he spoke at the demonstration on Saturday.

“What we’ve been witnessing is an attempt to dehumanize Palestinians,” he said, pushing back on what he said was a “myth” that the attack was “unprovoked” while decrying “75 years of dispossession, 75 years of abuse.”

Hamas rejects a proposed “two-state solution” — the peace initiative that seeks a Palestinian state established in territory that Israel captured in 1967 — and is sworn to Israel’s destruction. Israel has said a Palestinian state must be demilitarized so as not to threaten Israel.

During the march to the Federal Building, police in riot gear held off marchers from walking onto the 405 near Wilshire after about a dozen tried to get onto the busy freeway. A group of five or so appeared to get access to the top of a hill and started waving a flag.

In another encounter, a car waving an Israeli flag drove past and people threw objects at it, grabbed the flag and trampled it.

By 3 p.m., LAPD officers had formed a riot line. But tensions with police appeared to flare again when a man holding an Israeli flag approached some people. Police separated everyone after a few minutes.

A small group of counterprotesters were present on Saturday in West L.A, representing Jewish communities in the U.S., France and elsewhere, which have held rallies and vigils in solidarity with Israel after the Hamas attack, the deadliest killing spree against Israeli civilians in the country’s 75-year history.

Jews also gathered at synagogues this weekend for Shabbat services held amid the ongoing war. Rabbis led prayers of peace and grieved with their congregations. At many synagogues across the U.S., security was tight.

“More Jews were killed last Shabbat … than on any other day since the Holocaust,” said Rabbi Daniel Fellman during a service at Temple Sinai in Pittsburgh, a city already scarred by the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history.

“The world deserves better, the Palestinian people deserve better and we need to do better,” Fellman said.

Fellman urged an understanding that all people are connected, including Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Across the world, where the war is taking place, the violence did not appear to be easing. A humanitarian disaster was looming with the mass exodus of so many, United Nations officials warned.

In an update Saturday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said 2,215 civilians, including 724 children and 458 women, have been killed since the conflict broke out one week ago.

Israel’s military said Hamas’ attack and ongoing rocket fire from Gaza had killed more than 1,300 people and left at least 3,200 wounded as of Friday. At least 29 Americans are known to be among the dead, a State Department spokesperson confirmed Saturday

The attacks continued Saturday, with Hamas launching rockets into Israel and Israel carrying out strikes in Gaza.

An Israeli airstrike near the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza killed at least 27 people and wounded another 80, Gaza health authorities said. Most of the victims were women and children, the authorities said. Doctors from Kamal Edwan Hospital shared chaotic footage of charred and disfigured bodies.

It was not clear how many Palestinians remained in northern Gaza by Saturday afternoon, said Juliette Touma, a spokesperson for the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees. An estimated 1 million people have been displaced in Gaza in one week, she said.

As of about 4:20 p.m., the L.A. event was staying peaceful, LAPD Officer Drake Madison told City News Service.

Police responded to the Kohl’s store at the Bella Terra shopping center in the 7700 block of Edinger Avenue around 8 p.m. after reports of a red pickup truck crashing into the store.

Officers found three people with non-life-threatening injuries, who were all transported to a hospital. The store was open at the time of the crash, according to its posted hours. It is unclear if those injured were shoppers, employees or bystanders outside.

The suspect fled the scene and was apprehended by officers at the 16000 block of Beach Boulevard after a short pursuit, said police spokeswoman Jessica Cuchilla.

The suspect, Tuan Miller, 54, of Anaheim, was arrested and booked on suspicion of several counts including attempted murder, DUI causing bodily injury and evading police.

Social media footage recorded at the scene shows a completely shattered storefront, a mess inside the Kohl’s near the entrance and a large police presence.

Lakewood mall closes early — dozens of teens climb on cars, light fireworks https://www.ocregister.com/2023/09/23/lakewood-mall-closes-early-after-dozens-of-teens-climb-on-cars-light-fireworks/ Sun, 24 Sep 2023 04:03:51 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9578595&preview=true&preview_id=9578595 The Lakewood Center closed its doors early on Saturday night as hundreds of teenagers were involved in disturbances that spilled into the mall parking lots, where around 100 teenagers climbed on cars, lit fireworks and caused additional mayhem, authorities said.

Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lakewood Station responded to the Lakewood Center at around 8 p.m. on Saturday night and found dozens of teens causing a disturbance in the area, said watch commander Sgt. Robert Martinez.

Deputies began to try and separate the teens and send them home.

Earlier, a social media post led about 300 juveniles to gather starting at 2 p.m. at the mall at Lakewood Boulevard and Candlewood Street, said Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The juveniles came and went throughout the afternoon.

There may have been a fight early on that was quickly stopped by deputies, Koerner said.

The Lakewood Sheriff’s Station called for help from the Century, Norwalk and Pico Rivera stations to help get the juveniles out of the stores and the mall, he said.

Social media videos from the scene show teens running inside the mall, with deputies standing inside stores ushering them outside.

No arrests, thefts or injuries were reported, Koerner said.

The center closed at 7 p.m., two hours earlier than the usual 9 p.m. closing time on Saturdays.

KCAL video taken from over the scene about 9 p.m. showed the mall deserted except for multiple sheriff’s patrol vehicles.

Salazar was last seen days earlier as he was arrested outside his home in Palmdale, finally surrendering after an hours-long standoff with heavily armed deputies.

Sheriff’s officials and prosecutors say they believe Salazar was the man driving a Toyota Corolla that pulled up alongside Clinkunbroomer, sitting in the driver’s seat of his sheriff’s SUV around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Video of the attack shows Clinkunbroomer had stopped the vehicle at a red light. Just behind him, the driver of the Corolla accelerated to pull up on Clinkunbroomer’s left — officials have said that’s when Salazar suddenly opened fire on Clinkunbroomer, hitting him at least once before fleeing.

Salazar’s family, who told reporters gathered outside their family home on Monday, Sept. 18, that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, sat quietly in the courtroom gallery.

When Salazar appeared, family members stood up attempting to see him. They were ordered to remain seated.

After the brief hearing, Salazar was taken back to jail. The family left the courtroom, his mother and sister crying as they exited.

Salazar was charged with one count of murder, District Attorney George Gascón said. Added to that charge were three allegations — that he laid in wait to ambush Clinkunbroomer, that he attacked an on-duty law enforcement officer and that he used a firearm in the killing (a .22-caliber revolver) – that if proven would mean more prison time added to his potential sentence.

Salazar already faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if he’s convicted on the murder charge.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Blake, who appeared in Salazar’s hearing in the Antelope Valley, later spoke at the Hall of Justice in Downtown L.A., where Gascón and Sheriff Robert Luna announced the charges.

Blake said investigators believe Salazar purchased the gun he’s accused of using to kill Clinkunbroomer himself.

“There was a purchase made in the weeks before this crime occurred,” Blake said.

It was not immediately known if the gun was purchased legally.

Salazar’s family previously told reporters they were not aware he had access to a gun. Luna said after the search of the home that investigators found several weapons inside.

Law enforcement officials would not say how Salazar was able to get a gun despite his family describing a history of mental health issues and threats of suicide.

In California, anyone subjected to a 72-hour involuntary hold during a mental health crisis — known as a “5150” — cannot legally buy a gun for five years. If the person has been placed on two involuntary holds in a calendar year, they are banned for life from purchasing a gun.

However, according to the UC Davis Firearm Violence Research Center, such holds do not automatically trigger the filing of a restraining order to prevent the person from accessing weapons. Law enforcement officers or other valid petitioners must bring their case to a judge first to have the order approved.

It’s not clear if Salazar’s apparent mental health history ever led to him being subjected to an involuntary hold.

Salazar’s mother, Marle Salazar, told reporters her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and that over the years he received treatment for severe issues related to his illness. She also said sheriff’s deputies had visited their home before after Kevin Salazar threatened to commit suicide.

Deputy District Attorney David Ayvazian said Wednesday that investigators would “get records to be sure if there’s been any actual contact,” between Kevin Salazar and law enforcement or mental health professionals.

He said absent any records, prosecutors would not “speculate on (Salazar’s) mental health history.”

Ayvazian said the lying-in-wait enhancement was based on video of Salazar’s alleged encounter with Clinkunbroomer. He described Salazar’s alleged actions — slowing his car behind the deputy’s before pulling around him as he allegedly prepared to attack — as “consistent with the lying-in-wait theory.”

“Ryan had just left the station — in uniform, in his black-and-white police car. He was just sitting there waiting for the light to turn,” Luna said. “And he’s never coming home again.”

Officials would not say why they think Salazar killed Clinkunbroomer. They were not aware of any previous encounter between the men.

Clinkunbroomer, 30, had worked for the Sheriff’s Department eight years.

Behind Luna, Clinkunbroomer’s fiancée Brittany Lindsey clutched the arm of his mother. Also with them were Clinkunbroomer’s father, brother and sister.

Gascón said several members of Clinkunbroomer’s family are also in law enforcement: His grandfather and father, both retired, also worked for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. His brother is a current member of an Antelope Valley police department.

Through tears, her voice wavering, Lindsey said she was mourning what would have been a life she and Clinkunbroomer built together had they been able to get married. Luna earlier said Lindsey and Clinkunbroomer had just gotten engaged recently before he was killed.

“Ryan, I love you, and I miss you,” she said. “Until we meet again.”
