Anaheim police on Wednesday, Oct. 4, identified a man shot to death during a confrontation with officers the previous day.

Luis Muñoz, a 29-year-old resident of Anaheim, was killed in the parking lot of a gas station at Orangewood Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, the Police Department said.

After the shooting, a large knife that police believe belonged to Muñoz was found nearby, they said. Television footage showed a knife with a dark handle and a blade several inches long on the ground.

No officer was reported injured.

Detectives were interviewing officers and witnesses on Wednesday, so the department has not concluded exactly what prompted the shooting, said Sgt. Jon McClintock, a Police Department spokesman.

Police had attempted to arrest Muñoz, who was a suspect in a sexual assault, around 1 p.m. in the 300 block of Orangewood. He ran west from officers for three blocks until he reached the ARCO parking lot, where he was shot.

What exactly led to the shooting was not disclosed.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting, as will the Police Department’s Major Incident Review Team.
