Football roundup: Irvine, Santa Margarita, JSerra, Foothill, Santa Ana and Canyon win their Week 2 games

A roundup of highlights from Friday's Week 2 football games.

Irvine overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Troy 43-42 Friday at Fullerton High.

Joseph Tierney ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Khoa Bui threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Figueroa on a flea flicker to take the lead with two minutes remaining in the game.

Figueroa had three rushing touchdowns for Irvine (3-0) and Deacon Moss had a touchdown reception.

Rudy Alcala threw for 362 yards and had five touchdown passes for Troy (1-2). Vander Ploog had 161 yards receiving with three touchdowns and Declan Healey had 159 yards with two touchdowns receiving. Sophomore Ethan Mundt ran for 101 yards on 13 carries.

In other games Friday:

Santa Margarita 34, Liberty of Bakersfield 14: Senior quarterback Hunter Melton had a breakout game for Santa Margarita (2-1) in a road win.

The lefty completed 17 of 25 passes for 316 yards with three touchdowns. Trent Mosley caught 9 passes for 187 yards with two touchdowns and also ran for two touchdowns. Sean Embree caught six passes for 124 yards with a touchdown for the Eagles.

LeVar Talley had a sack for Santa Margarita and sophomore Logan Hirou had an interception, his third in two games.

JSerra 41, Chaminade 7: JSerra ran for five touchdowns in a rout of visiting Chaminade.

Gabriel Rivas had led the Lions (2-1) with over 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Kamar Garbourel ran for a touchdown and quarterback Michael Tollefson ran for two touchdowns.

San Juan Hills 50, Santiago of Corona 6: Quarterback Timmy Herr recorded five touchdowns for San Juan Hills (3-0) in a dominant win over Santiago of Corona.

The sophomore threw four touchdown passes and added a rushing touchdown. Jason Robinson Jr. had two touchdown receptions and his brother Jadyn Robinson had a touchdown catch. Jack Shigo had a toichdown reception and Sullivan Land ran for a touchdown.

Gavin Blum returned an interception for a touchdown to lead the defense.

St. Margaret’s 26, Capistrano Valley Christian 20: Matt Arena ran for the game-winning touchdown with two minutes remaining in the game to give St. Margaret’s its first win of the season against crosstown foe Capo Valley Christian.

The game was a battle between two talented quarterbacks. Max Ruff of St. Margaret’s (1-2) threw for over 220 yards with three touchdowns while CVC’s Nate Richie threw for over 240 yards with three touchdowns.

Will Viola had all three touchdown receptions for St. Margaret’s and had over 100 yards receiving. Max Krosky had over 10 catches and 150 yards with two touchdown receptions for Capo Valley Christian (1-1).

Western 34, El Toro 6: Western put forth a dominant defensive performance in a win against El Toro.

Clayton Corbett led the Western (2-1) defense with 18 tackles, five for a loss and two sacks. Malik Benjamin had two sacks and a defensive touchdown.

Anthony Luna completed 14 of 19 passes for 285 yards with three touchdowns, two of which were to Josh Faulkner. Malachi Alatorre ran for 79 yards with a touchdown, and added two tackles for a loss on defense.

San Clemente 28, La Costa Canyon 0: San Clemente had four rushing touchdowns in a shutout win over La Costa Canyon of Carlsbad.

Aiden Rubin and Colin Kohl each had two touchdown runs for the Tritons (3-0). Rubin had 129 yards rushing and Dylan Mills threw for 162 yards.

Max Gonzales led the San Clemente defense with four tackles and an interception.

Aliso Niguel 55, Valley Christian 0: Aliso Niguel ran for four touchdowns in a blowout win over Valley Christian of Cerritos.

Luke Jones led the Aliso Niguel (2-1) rushing effort with 69 yards on eight carries with a touchdown. Jarett Sabol and Tommy Smith had long touchdown runs and quarterback Hunter Najm added a rushing touchdown.

Najm completed 7 of 12 passes for 120 yards with two touchdowns. Raidon Jones led the defense with two fumble recoveries, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Alex Newcomb also returned a fumble for a touchdown for the Wolverines.

University 21, Los Amigos 7: Koa Saito threw a pair of touchdown passes for University in a win over Los Amigos.

Blaine Anderson led the Trojans in receiving and had a touchdown reception. Brooks Beckmann had a touchdown catch for University (1-2) and Jai Williams had a touchdown run.

Peter Hernandez had a rushing touchdown for Los Amigos (1-1).

Dana Hills 41, Long Beach Wilson 10: Jace Lowe threw for 181 yards with two touchdowns in his first start for Dana Hills (2-1).

Basketball standout Niki Grguric had 82 yards receiving with a touchdown and sophomore Charlie Eckl had a touchdown catch.

Noah Kucera had a touchdown run and threw a touchdown pass. Noah Brown led the Dolphins defense with three sacks and a forced fumble. Luther Kingston recovered an errant snap in the endzone for a touchdown.

Foothill 35. Orange 22: Knights senior quarterback Nicholas Miali completed 14 of 17 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns as the Knights (2-1) beat the Panthers (1-2) at Tustin High.

Orange running back Ardwon Morris rushed 175 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

Foothill scored 23 unanswered points in the second half.

The Knights play Troy at Tustin High on Friday. Orange plays La Habra on Friday at El Modena High.

Santa Ana 41, Garden Grove 21: Charlie Hughes ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception for a touchdown as the Saints (2-1) beat the Argonauts (1-2) at Santa Ana Stadium.

Hughes scored on runs of 5 and 10 yards and finished with 100 rushing yards on 17 carries. His scoring interception return covered 28 yards.

The Saints play at Laguna Beach on Friday. Garden Grove is home against Gahr on Friday.

Servite 60, La Mirada 14: Camren Hughes ran for three touchdowns and Leo Hannan scored on a 71-yard run and threw a touchdown pass for the Friars (2-1) in their win over the Matadors (0-3).

Servite has a home game Friday against Los Alamitos at Cerritos College.

Canyon 28, Fullerton 14: Senior quarterback Corin Rynders threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns as the Comanches (1-2) beat the Indians (1-2) at El Modena High.

Rynders completed 25 of his 39 attempts. Kyle Bayle had two touchdown receptions and DJ Knupp had one.

Kyle Mills rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Canyon coach Phil Hughes credited linebacker Noah Eckenrode for leading the defense.

Canyon’s next game is Sept. 15 against Fountain Valley at Westminster High. Fullerton Fullerton is home against Santa Fe this Friday.

Westminster 41, Santa Ana Valley 0: Senior quarterback Benny Burns threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers for the Lions (2-1) in their home win over the Falcons (0-3).

Ethan Cedillo, Gabriel Ortega, Jesus Ortega and Andrew Salas caught the touchdown passes. Jesus Ortega rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Westminster senior strong safety Ezekiel Cedillo had five solo tackles and four tackles for loss. The Lions, who shut out Santiago last week, play at home against Anaheim on Friday.
