We asked our photographers to pick their favorite images from October 2023, and here are some they selected.

People at the OC Parks at the nature center in Caspers Wilderness Park in San Juan Capistrano joined the rest of Orange County as they looked to the sky early Saturday morning, October 14, 2023, during the annular ring of fire solar eclipse. At the height of the eclipse, the moon covered approximately 70 percent of the sun’s surface. It was the most coverage of the solar surface in an eclipse visible in Southern California until 2045.

In Santa Ana, students at Orange County School of the Arts showed off their pumpkin creations as part of OCSA’s Annual Painted Pumpkin Auction.

Over in Tustin, visitors came out for the 66th Annual Tustin Tiller Days at Columbus Tustin Park. The three-day event, held since 1957, celebrates Orange County’s agricultural heritage.

SeaCoast Grace Church in Cypress was host to funeral services for Manhattan Beach police officer Chad Swanson, 35, a 13-year veteran, who died in a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound 405 Freeway in the Carson area earlier this month. Swanson was married with three sons.

In Irvine, Julia Heiman was overcome with emotion as she held posters of two girls being held hostage by Hamas during a vigil at the corner of Alton Parkway and Culver Drive, in support of the more than 200 people who were kidnapped in Israel earlier this month. “It’s so painful to me that Israel has to defend its right to defend itself and to think of the brutality of what the children have endured,” said Heiman.

At Christ Cathedral, mourners came together to remember Bishop Tod D. Brown. Brown led the Diocese of Orange for 14 years.

October ended with Halloween, as it always does – there was a dog parade in Huntington Beach, folks in Laguna Woods held their annual decorated golf cart parade, Orange County School of the Arts had a costume contest and flash mob dance, and Fountain Valley Regional Hospital Pediatric Halloween Parade with rescued dog Hazel the Hobbler.

Check out the photos and follow The Orange County Register on Facebook and Instagram. Here are our staff photographers’ individual pages: Paul Bersebach, Jeff Gritchen, Leonard Ortiz, Mark Rightmire, and Mindy Schauer.

They started their season in borrowed volleyball uniforms with only three weeks of practice. A few months later, they finished their season losing by just two points to the No.1-ranked team in their bracket.

It’s not groundbreaking to see a girl playing football, but this school year they had their own CIF-sanctioned sport: Flag football. Dozens of teams formed in the state for the inaugural season that ended a week ago.

At Los Alamitos High School, the pressure to start a team came from their future quarterback, Rylee Robles, who said she was watching the boys practice and wanted to play football in high school.

Robles is no stranger to football, she’s been playing in Friday Night Lights, a youth flag football league, for a few years.

When she heard CIF officials were considering making it an official high school sport, she said she took action talking with school officials and posted flyers around campus. She was able to drum up enough interest to assemble a team and hire a coach.

The games are quick, with two 20-minute halves with a running clock and a five-minute halftime. Touchdowns are six points, but there is no kicking. The point after a touchdown is either a 1- or 2-point conversion based on the distance the team chooses.

The historic nature of the inaugural season wasn’t lost on Robles. Throughout the season, Robles said she thought, “Oh my gosh that was the first touchdown, that was the first flag pull.” It was small moments, she said, that gave her, “a real big perspective of this being the first time.”

Head Coach Laura Hart said, “The competitiveness of the level play has increased now that it’s an actual CIF sport … and it’s gonna increase as the years go on.”

Hart said she is pleased with the progress the team made throughout the season. And, after the season-ending 2 point loss, she told the team, “hold your head high because you played at a high level the whole time.”

“The Power of Photography,” curated by Peter Fetterman, includes 73 original prints and is on display now through Jan. 14 at the Santa Ana museum.

“From the bizarre Boschian fantasies of Melvin Sokolsky to the haunting humanity of Edward Weston’s portraits, from rare interior shots by famed nude photographer Ruth Bernhard to Steve McCurry’s ‘Afghan Girl,’ one of the most recognizable photographs ever taken, this exhibition gathers some of the most unique and heartening photographs from the 20th century,” the exhibit’s description says.

The iconic images are expected to take visitors on a journey exploring how photography impacts the world and shines light on the human experience, according to the museum. The photos are accompanied by Fetterman’s words as well.

And then there’s “Beyond the Great Wave: Works by Hokusai from the British Museum,” an exhibit featuring more than 100 paintings, drawings and woodblock prints, including a preserved early example of “The Great Wave,” by Hokusai. This exhibit runs through Jan. 7.

“These artworks provide insights into his early career, rise to fame, fascination with the natural and supernatural realms, personal life, and his quest for immortality through his art,” an exhibit description says. “Hokusai’s creations stand distinct from the art of his Japanese contemporaries, characterized by an intensely individual, subjective, energized, and sublime style, promising a powerfully emotional and spiritual experience to all who attend.”

“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” depicts three boats navigating the sea, with a large wave cresting. It’s considered to be possibly the most famous artwork in Japanese history.

And if that’s the piece you’re most excited to see, you’re not alone. Seán O’Harrow, the new president and CEO of Bowers, said in August that “The Great Wave” was the art piece he’d most like to bring to the museum.

And now it — and the photography exhibit — are the first two opened at Bowers under his leadership.

Calling the piece “one of the most iconic images in the history of art around the world,” O’Harrow on Friday also noted it had a personal connection for him. O’Harrow grew up in Honolulu where he said he was also immersed in Japanese art.

“For me, it makes me feel at home,” he said.

“The Power of Photography,” O’Harrow said, is “profound.’

“It’s one of the few exhibitions that I’ve been to where you can’t pass any one because there’s a reason for everything,” O’Harrow said.

We asked our photographers to pick their favorite images from September 2023, and here are some they selected.

An electric train, fast airplanes andpresidential candidates visiting topped the month’s highlights around the county.

The month started with Cook’s Corner patrons and employees gathering with community members and first responders in a field at sunset next to the Library of the Canyons for a vigil in honor victims in the mass shooting two weeks prior at the popular biker bar.

Historic reenactments had costumed participants firing their weapons as they relived history. In Huntington Beach, soldiers fire their cannons during the battle reenactments at the 30th annual Civil War Days Living History Event in Huntington Central Park. Down in Dana Point, a gunner on the ship Bill of Rights fired his cannons during the mock sea battles at the Ocean Institute’s 39th Annual Maritime Festival.

Over in Orange, a new 1/3 scale electric train rolled in to service at Irvine Regional Park. A charger installed on the tracks in the station area automatically charges the train’s battery when it is stopped for loading and unloading passengers. Since there is no actual steam powering the train, the chugging sound now emanates from an on-board audio system.

San Clemente transplants Caroline Marks and Filipe Toledo won the Rip Curl World Surf League Finals at Lower Trestles. Later, the World Surf League announced the world champions will be decided again in 2024 at the famed surf spot just south of San Clemente. The last three finals have been held there, bringing the world’s best surfers and a big buzz to the region.

The last weekend of September was busy as former President Donald Trump, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy visited Anaheim during the state’s GOP convention. On this way to the event, Trump’s plane made a detour and flew through the Pacific Airshow in Huntington Beach.

The Pacific Airshow capped of the month with air demonstrations for thousands of people on the sand in Huntington Beach over three days.

We asked our photographers to pick their favorite images from August 2023, and here are some they selected.

Besides a rare tropical storm, August weather was almost great. Cool mornings and warm days were the norm for most of the month.

In Costa Mesa, the OC Fair ended its annual run, while around the county kids headed back to school.

The Register’s own beach reporter, Laylan Connelly, who has written about surfing over the past two decades, earned a place in the 2023 Surfers’ Hall of Fame, placing her hands in cement on the corner of PCH and Main Street in Huntington Beach.

Connelly wasn’t the only excitement in Huntington Beach – the US Open of Surfing drew big crowds for the week-long competition.

Water is always welcome in Orange County, and while Tropical Storm Hilary didn’t do much damage, it did deliver a lot of water. Coastal cities prepared with berms and the canyons and burn areas prepped with sandbags.

Over in Anaheim, Disneyland employees took to the Rivers of America before sunrise to compete in the annual Disneyland Resort Canoe Races. Team “DC Gorilla Oarfare” won the Fastest on the River award.

A few miles fro Disneyland, bull riders from across the country came to the Honda Center to compete during a stop on the Professional Bull Riders tour. The PBR is the largest bull riding league in the world, sanctioning hundreds of events every year in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Australia.

At the end of the month, tragedy struck in Trabuco Canyon when three people were killed and six more injured in a mass shooting at the family friendly biker bar Cook’s Corner.

Longtime patrons of Cook’s Corner held a prayer service for the victims of the shooting at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest a few days later.

Sethi, a 2010 graduate of LAHS, drowned during a family vacation in Big Bear Lake a few years after graduation. Recently Sethi’s parents, Mohinder and Gurjit Sethi, added almost $50,000 to the school district’s $130,000 to help create the wellness garden next to the existing Well Space.

The new garden has seating, trees and a water feature meant to have a calming effect on students.

In 2013, Sethi was a 20-year-old interdisciplinary studies major at Cal State Northridge when he told his mother he was getting a job. She thought he’d work at McDonald’s or a retail store, she said.

But her son had other plans. He got a job at an arboretum in Pasadena.

His mother admitted she didn’t know what an arboretum was, but she knew he, “really, really loved nature and really wanted to help people,” she said.

After his death, Mohinder Sethi visited her son’s work, she said, talking with his coworkers and touching every plant he touched.

During a ribbon cutting ceremony for The Oasis on Tuesday, Sept. 5,  Mohinder Sethi told a story from that fateful trip to the mountains.

As stones and rocks jabbed his feet as he walked barefoot, she asked her son, “Why don’t you put your shoes back on?” His reply, she said: “It’s good to connect with the Earth, don’t you think so?”

She ended her remarks about the new garden saying, “Today I think he’s well connected with the Earth.”

I’ve spent everyday for the last two and a half years – with the exception of sick and travel days – taking brisk, 30 minute walks in different locations around OC.

The intent is to get a little exercise each day, raise my heart rate and close the rings on my Apple Watch – and take some pictures with my iPhone.

For those who don’t have an Apple Watch, there are three rings that fill in as you go about your day: exercise, calories and standing.

Since January 2021, I’ve managed to photograph more than 1,000 miles of Orange County streets with goals set to 35 minutes of exercise, 720 calories and 15 hours of standing.

The resulting collection of pictures has become a ground-level snapshot of different neighborhoods, touching every city in the county.

We asked our photographers to pick their favorite images from July 2023, and here are some they selected.

Summer finally arrived as July heated up and people hit the beaches – the theme of the month was traditions.

Fourth of July lit up the sky, but not before Huntington Beach held it’s 119th Independence Day Parade, the self-proclaimed, “biggest Fourth of July Parade west of the Mississippi River.”

Another long-standing tradition reappeared in Huntington Beach: Adventure Playground, where children paddle on rafts, climb wooden forts and slip down mudslides. It reopened for the summer after being closed since 2019.

The traditions continued down the coast in Newport Beach where hundreds of participants in the city’s Junior Lifeguard program. They ran into the water at the start of a buoy swim near the Balboa Pier on Ben Carlson Day. Carlson, which honors a Newport Beach lifeguard who died saving a swimmer during a big swell in 2014.

In Costa Mesa, the OC Fair opened its doors for the 133rd time, and has already seen several sold-out days.

Tradition circled the race track in Cypress as dachshunds competed in the 26th running of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals at the Los Alamitos Race Course.

Both Los Angels football teams, The Rams and The Chargers, opened their traditional training camps, welcome fans to see their favorite players.

And, down in Laguna Beach, an almost century-old tradition continued as enthusiasts turned out in droves to celebrate the Pageant of the Masters’ 90th season by taking part in a lively and colorful parade through the downtown. The parade, which welcomed festival revelers to dress up as their favorite artists or works of art, was a nod to the pageant’s very first living pictures parade in 1933, which took place during the Festival of Arts’ second year.

Stay safe and stay healthy!

Tucked away at the back of Irvine Regional Park is a 210-acre Boy Scout camp that’s not just for scouts.

The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center, which is owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America, Orange County Council, offers several programs throughout the year for the community, including a summer camp that, according to director Regina Engle, strives to be, “a combination of academics and recreation” or, more simply put, “learning and fun.”

Each day of the camp is a little different, with children trying archery, swimming, taking hikes, visiting an orchard,  panning for gold and digging for coal inside of a mine. STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, are integrated with other lessons throughout the activities.

Atop the center’s Adventure Hill, campers scale the climbing tower, fly across the zip line and scamper through a ropes course. To navigate the 30-foot tall ropes, campers work together and must communicate as they go from section to section, honing leadership skills.

The center’s pool is not only for swimming, campers spend time designing cardboard boats to get across the water without sinking.

On the underside of a hill is a mine dug for educational purposes. Campers can pan through sloughs for gold, or at least what looks like gold. From above the mine, campers descend a staircase lined with helmets and shovels to dig for coal in the sandy bottom.

Camper Victoria Vadkerti recently returned for her second year at the camp. Her favorite part, she said, is rock climbing, but she also learned, “about how to survive in the wild and made a lot of friends.”

The camp runs week-long sessions throughout the summer.

We asked our photographers to pick their favorite moments from June 2023, and here are some they selected.

Graduations was the theme of June, with some pride, dogs and sports to round out the gloomy weather.

In Huntington Beach, Volkswagen held their North American launch for the ID.Buzz, the new, electric version, of the classic bus. The event included a car show of classic buses.

Patriotism was in full display this month, 248 American flags were placed at Irvine’s William R. Mason Regional Park to recognize the U.S. Army’s 248th birthday and commemorate Flag Day. Prado Dam’s Bicentennial Mural makeover was completed and the new musical based on Captain America premiere at Disneyland. And, Marines jumped in to the arms of family members as they returned to Camp Pendleton after a seven-month deployment.

People gathered in Santa Ana for the annual OC Pride parade and festival.

Dogs were hangin’ 20 as they hit the waves south of the pier in Huntington Beach during the Incredible Dog Challenge western regional competition. The event also included agility, diving dogs, the Fetch It event and Jack Russell races.

Down in south Orange County, seniors held their annual Laguna Woodstock music festival. People dressed in their best 1960s and ’70s attire, danced to the live music and picnicked on the lawn during the annual event.
