JSerra’s highly ranked girls cross country team just got stronger

Transfers Chole Elbaz and Sophie Polay have become eligible to compete for the Lions.

JSerra’s girls cross country team that is No. 4 in DyeStatCal’s national rankings will get stronger Monday, Oct. 2, with two standout transfers becoming eligible.

The mandatory sit-out period for Chole Elbaz and Sophie Polay expired Sunday, making both eligible this week.

Elbaz was the CIF Southern Section Division 5 champion last year as a freshman at Xavier Prep in Palm Desert. Polay finished seventh in the CIF-SS Division 3 girls cross country finals last season.

JSerra’s girls on Saturday finished first in the Trinity League Preview meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach. Santa Margarita sophomore Alahna Thomas was first in 18 minutes, 14.9 seconds on the 3-mile course. JSerra displayed its depth its runners finishing in places 2-8 with all seven of those runners crossing the finish line simultaneously.

Santa Margarita was the Trinity Preview boys team winner, led by senior Zachary Gibson’s 14:48 first-place finish.

Also on Saturday, Trabuco Hills boys and girls won team championships in the Central Park Invitational. Trabuco Hills senior Ryan Stanley was first among the varsity boys at 14:51.8. Trabuco Hills junior Holly Barker won the varsity girls race at 16:07.1.

Trabuco Hills is No. 2 in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls Top 10 and is No. 4 in the CIF-SS Division 1 boys Top 10. PrepCalTrack.com supplies CIF-SS cross country rankings.

The JSerra boys and girls teams and the Dana Hills and San Clemente boys teams are scheduled to compete in the Clovis Invitational on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. Woodward Park is the site of the CIF State Championships on Nov. 25.

San Clemente is No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 1. Dana Hills is No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 3. JSerra is No. 2 in Division 4.
