NORWALK – Winning the Division 1 championship in CIF Southern Section girls volleyball is impressive enough.

To win the Division 1 title without losing a set in the playoffs is even more so.

Mater Dei completed that perfect run Saturday by sweeping Mira Costa in three sets, 28-26, 25-15, 25-20, in the Division 1 final at Cerritos College.

It is Mater Dei’s sixth CIF-SS girls volleyball championship and its first since 2018.

Mater Dei went 3-0 in Open Division pool play with sweeps of Palos Verdes, Marymount and Sierra Canyon before playing Mira Costa in Saturday’s final.

Mater Dei is No. 1 and Mira Costa is No. 2 in the MaxPreps national rankings.

Saturday’s match was the third time Mater Dei and Mira Costa played each other this season. They split their two previous matches.

Senior outside hitter Isabel Clark led the Monarchs in kills, as she usually does, with 18, and most of them were bullets. Sophomore outside hitter Layli Ostovar had seven kills and senior opposite hitter Cymarah Gordon had six kills.

Clark also was the Mater Dei digs leader with 12 and Ostovar had 11 digs. Freshman middle blocker Emma Kingston had seven blocks and sophomore middle Addison Coady had four blocks.

Mater Dei coach Dan O’Dell said sweeping Mira Costa on Saturday and sweeping through the Division 1 playoffs was within the Monarchs’ capabilities.

“It shows that this team always has had a ton of talent,” O’Dell said. “I had this year circled for two years now. Since they were sophomores, I knew this was a pretty special group and I knew this year could be special. But ‘could be special’ and actually performing like that are two totally different things.

“Since the playoffs began, they came in with a new focus. This is what they wanted to accomplish.”

Clark agreed that the Monarchs got more serious when the playoffs started.

“Our practices have shown that we’re really competitive lately,” said Clark, who is committed to the University of San Diego. “Nothing can really stop us lately no matter what’s going on … We had a lot of energy going into the game.”

Mater Dei and Mira Costa, both with 38-3 records, continue their seasons next week in the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs. Both teams are sure to be placed in the CIF Open Division.

The regional brackets will be announced Sunday. Open Division play begins Wednesday.

Mater Dei never trailed in the first set. The Monarchs seemed ready to put the first set set away when they had a 24-22 lead. Mira Costa rallied to tie it 24-24 and again at 25-25 and 26-26 before the Monarchs got points on blocks by Gordon and Kingston to win 28-26.

The Monarchs quickly took control in the second set to go on to a 25-14 win.

Mira Costa was the better team in the early portion of the third set until Mater Dei caught the Mustangs 12-12 and proceeded to pull away from there for the 25-20 match-clinching win.

The CIF-SS girls volleyball championship is the first for the Patriots (34-5).

“I coached in the finals before,” Beckman coach Darin McBain said. “But this one felt different. I had a group of girls that I knew I could trust in big situations and have come through all year. So, this one felt like we’re stepping on the floor with a real, real, real opportunity to win a CIF title.”

Beckman knew it might be a battle from the first set when the Vikings (31-5) took a 5-2 lead and didn’t give up the lead until Nika Safavi’s kill to the back row put the Patriots ahead 15-14.

But the Vikings took the lead back at 16-15 and the score was tied six times from that point before Safavi scored the final two points to win the set for the Patriots.

Campbell Hall’s Sierra Starkman took over the third set, scoring on six kills to help the Vikings take a 12-5 lead and then added two more kills down the stretch.

The Patriots had not lost a set in the previous 11 matches.

“In our league, we just we went 3-0 with everybody,” Safavi said. “So, this was kind of different because this team (Campbell Hall) was really good. They were digging every ball. They had good blockers. They had good hitters and it was just new for us. We were all kind of down, but then one of our teammates, Olivia Ramirez, said, ‘Guys, it’s normal to lose a set.’ We can’t win every set. We knew it was fine. So, the pressure got off of us a little bit, so we kind of pushed through after that.”

The fourth set also went back and forth with neither team able to go on any kind of a run.

Campbell Hall was ahead 14-11 when Camryn Hayek scored on three kills and a block to give the Patriots an 18-17 lead.

Victoria Turner and Safavi added kills to make the score 20-17.

Beckman then closed out the set and the match on a 5-2 run.

Hayek and Safavi led Beckman with 20 and 15 kills, respectively, and the Patriots had 13 blocks as a team.

Starkman had 13 kills to lead the Vikings.

“It feels amazing,” Beckman libero Stacy Reeves said. “This is like a surreal moment for us. Playing here was such an amazing opportunity. Playing with this group of girls is a really special experience.”

Both teams qualified for the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs, which begin Tuesday. The regional pairings come out Sunday.

NORWALK — It had been a long time coming for the JSerra girls volleyball team, and when the Lions finally won their first CIF Southern Section championship Saturday it wasn’t a surprise.

The Lions swept Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran 25-22, 25-23, 25-17 at Cerritos College in the Division 2 final.

JSerra coach Mike Murphy, who has been at the helm since 2013, expected his team to take care of business Saturday.

“We’ve won 13 of our last 14 matches. We’re just on fire right now,” Murphy said. “We came in the match full of confidence and there was a mutual feeling among the girls that it was just business and time to do it for the school. I’m so happy for JSerra right now.”

This was the third time JSerra (30-10) and Orange Lutheran (26-14) faced each other this season. They split the first two meetings.

Tatum Johnson collected a team-high 10 kills for the Lions.

Johnson and her teammates sought redemption after losing to the Lancers in their last match.

“We were so ready to come out here and play confidently, and show everything we’ve learned over the season,” Johnson said.

Reese Brown finished with nine kills, Emma Champagne had eight kills and Charlotte Nowak added seven kills.

After narrowly taking the first set, the Lions took a 24-20 lead in the second set but were met with fierce resistance from Orange Lutheran. The Lancers fought off three set-point chances before finally dropping the set on Brown’s set-clinching point.

“I took two timeouts and basically told them we have to win this set,” Murphy said, “they’re not going to give it to you. But we can do it.”

Orange Lutheran coach Henry Valiente expected his team to battle back despite facing a deficit.

“We have that fighter’s mentality,” he said. “We knew for a fact that we could string these points together because we compete for every point.”

Freshman outside hitter Westley Matavao had a match-high 17 kills for the Lancers.

Murphy tried his best to contain Matavao’s impact on the match.

“We knew their outside (Matavao) was their go-to girl, so we knew we didn’t have to stop her all the time, just slow her down,” Murphy said. “I think our liberos just sat in that pocket cross-court and had some amazing digs.”

Valiente was disappointed with the result but is looking forward to the Lancers competing for another championship in the regional playoffs.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to go to state.” Valiente said.

NORWALK – Capistrano Valley Christian won the CIF Southern Section Division 4 girls volleyball championship Saturday with a three-set sweep of El Dorado , 26-24, 25-23, 25-21, at Cerritos College.

The Eagles came back for a big early deficit to win the first set, pulled away in the latter portion of the second set and led throughout the third set.

Capistrano Valley Christian (30-4) won its second CIF-SS championship. The first title was won in 1992. The Eagles’ previous finals appearance was a loss in 2021.

The season continues for Capistrano Valley Christian and El Dorado (28-6) next week in the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs.

The athleticism and powerful hitting of both teams Saturday rivaled what is seen in higher-division volleyball.

Eagles outside hitter Kenna Henjum had team-highs of 14 kills and four service aces. Junior outside hitter Bella Lee contributed five kills and junior setter Shauna McDowell had 16 assists.

Sophomore outside hitter Sofia Shine led the Golden Hawks with 16 kills. Senior outside hitter Emerson Ahsmuhs added 14 kills.

El Dorado was the taller team at the net.

“That brings a lot of challenges to our blocking,” Henjum said. “We played super strong defensively. That’s one of the strongest parts of our game is our defense.”

Capistrano Valley Christian trailed 11-4 in the first set. The Eagles then went on a 9-2 run to take the lead, with a McDowell ace putting them on top 14-13 and they went on to the 26-24 win. The Eagles held off an El Dorado comeback in the second set to win 25-23 and scored seven of the third set’s first 10 points on the way to the 25-21 victory.

El Dorado coach Britney Brown said there was a mix of disappointment and pride from Saturday’s result.

“We are pretty awesome,” Brown said. “We’ve got some great athletes. This stings a little bit, it’s not what we wanted, but we’ll be back.”

Brown’s assessment of Capistrano Valley Christian: “You’ve got to give to them. They’re a good scrambling team. They wouldn’t let our ball go down.”

Capistrano Valley Christian coach Kelle Bond talked after the match about the team’s senior leadership. Lee said that created a winning environment.

“We all really bonded as a team,” Lee said. “Our culture and our energy, that really helped us win today.”

Fryer: Beckman girls volleyball in position to win first CIF-SS title https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/02/fryer-beckman-girls-volleyball-in-position-to-win-first-cif-ss-title/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 21:59:37 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9652142&preview=true&preview_id=9652142 The spike, the kill shot, is the spectacular “ooh” and “ahh” play in indoor volleyball.

Just as important to winning volleyball is the defensive play, the blocks at the net, the digs and the bumps that get the offense started so the kills will happen.

It’s the defensive side of the game that has Beckman’s girls volleyball team in excellent position to win its first CIF championship in the sport.

Beckman plays Campbell Hall on Saturday in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 championship match at Cerritos College.

The Patriots are 33-5. They have won nine consecutive matches since a tournament loss to Sierra Canyon, a CIF-SS Division 1 playoff team.

That loss was on Sept. 30. Since then the Patriots have not lost a set and that includes their four match victories in the playoffs.

Beckman senior setter Victoria Turner said the team’s defense starts at the net.

“One thing we’ve improved on a lot is our blocking,” she said. “That lets our other players see the court better. We’re picking up balls we weren’t picking up earlier in the season.”

Turner will play next season at UC San Diego. She said it’s long been her goal to attend college in San Diego, and she made it happen.

Senior libero Stacy Reeves, who was the best player on the court when the Patriots beat Canyon in the Division 3 semifinals, will go to Texas Christian University on a beach volleyball scholarship.

That’s all of the college-committed players on Beckman’s roster. There could be more in coming weeks.

Beckman coach Darin McBain said senior setter Joy Lee is the team’s best server. Senior outside hitters Camryn Hayek and Nika Safavi hit with power. Junior opposite hitter Sophia Saad is a versatile player.

The Patriots don’t have that one outstanding hitter that many of the better teams rely upon.

“I don’t think anybody necessarily stands out for us,” McBain said. “But we do have a few we can go to. We can spread it out.”

Turner appreciates that.

“When I’m the setter,” she said, “I can trust the (middle blockers) to get the ball if the outsides aren’t working.”

Beckman was seeded No. 1 in Division 3 and Campbell Hall (31-4), which is in Studio City, was seeded No. 2 going into the playoffs.

McBain, who was Beckman’s coach in their only other CIF-SS finals appearance in 2016 when they lost to Ventura in the Division 2 final, has studied Campbell Hall and sees something familiar.

“They look a lot like us,” McBain said. “They play defense really well. They don’t let the ball hit the court.”

With the two teams’ shared ball-control skills, McBain expects some long rallies Saturday.

“The team that can stay mentally tough,” he said, “is the team that’s going to win it.”

Mater Dei girls volleyball sweeps Sierra Canyon to earn spot in CIF-SS Division 1 final https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/28/mater-dei-girls-volleyball-sweeps-sierra-canyon-to-earn-spot-in-cif-ss-division-1-final/ Sun, 29 Oct 2023 06:26:08 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9644247&preview=true&preview_id=9644247 SANTA ANA — The Mater Dei girls volleyball team is going back to the CIF Southern Section finals.

The Monarchs swept Sierra Canyon, 25-15, 25-15, 25-20, Saturday night to book their place in the Division 1 final.

They made their last finals appearance in 2021 and are trying to win their first CIF-SS title since 2018.

Mater Dei (39-2) did not drop a set during its three pool play matches, beating Palos Verdes and Marymount before sweeping the Trailblazers, who won the title in 2022.

No. 1-seeded Mater Dei will face No. 2 seed Mira Costa in the final on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Cerritos College.

Monarchs coach Dan O’Dell said his team’s motivation to become champions has been a key factor in the postseason.

“I think after last year, this team really wanted to make sure they could get back there,” O’Dell said. “We knew we had the talent to do it, we just knew we had to make sure we could perform, and these girls have really stepped up. I couldn’t be more proud of the way they’ve played the last couple of matches.”

Senior outside hitter Izzy Clark had a game-high 17 kills and 12 digs, fellow outside hitter Layli Ostovar added 15 kills and Michigan commit Cymarah Gordon finished with 11 kills.

“I think those three pins, between Layli, Izzy and Cymarah, are just, they’ve been pretty amazing these past few matches,” O’Dell said. “All three of them have been just absolute studs. It’s been fantastic to see, and if we’re going to have all three of those girls on, we’re very hard to stop.”

Setter Julia Kakkis controlled the tempo of the match with 45 assists.

“We go pretty fast out there, so it’s really tough to block when you can put the speed over there,” O’Dell said.

Ostovar had seven of her 15 kills in the opening set as the Monarchs constantly found success attacking from the left side.

“She was great and she had outstanding numbers again tonight,” O’Dell said of Ostovar.

Sierra Canyon (34-8) fared much better in the third set with an attack led by Danica Rach and Hanna McGinest and was within two points late in the set before Mater Dei pulled away.

Mater Dei has split its two meetings with the Mira Costa this season.

“Mira Costa is a great team, their coach is a great coach, they’ll be well prepared,” O’Dell said. “It’s just gonna come down to who can execute the best on the biggest stage. It should be a very fun, very close, even match.”
