CIF-SS girls volleyball: Previews of the matchups for Orange County’s teams in the finals

Beckman, Capistrano Valley Christian, El Dorado, JSerra, Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran will play for CIF Southern Section volleyball titles Saturday at Cerritos College.

CIF-SS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

All four matches Saturday at Cerritos College.

DIVISION 1 

Mater Dei (37-3) vs. Mira Costa (38-2), 7:05 p.m.

Outlook: Mater Dei is No. 1 and Mira Costa is No. 2 in MaxPreps’ national rankings. Trinity League champion Mater Dei was seeded No. 1. Mira Costa, which won the Bay League championship for its CIF Southern Section-record 29th consecutive league title, was seeded No. 2 in the eight-team Division 1 bracket. Mater Dei swept its three pool-play opponents — Palos Verdes, Marymount and Sierra Canyon. Mira Costa also swept its way into the final. Mira Costa swept Mater Dei in a nonleague match Aug. 29 at Mira Costa. Mater Dei defeated Mira Costa in tournament play in September. Mater Dei takes a 20-match winning streak into Saturday’s final. Mater Dei is led by 6-foot-1 senior outside hitter Isabel Clark, who committed to the University of San Diego. Matt Fuerbringer, the father of Mira Costa senior setter Charlie Fuerbringer, was a volleyball and basketball star at Estancia and went on to play for the USA National Team and was a beach volleyball standout. Mira Costa has won 15 CIF-SS girls volleyball championships. Mater Dei has won five CIF-SS titles in the sport. Mira Costa beat Mater Dei in the CIF-SS finals in 2000.

DIVISION 2

Orange Lutheran (26-13) vs. JSerra (29-10), 12:30 p.m.

Outlook: It’s an all-Trinity League final. The two teams split their two league matches this season. JSerra finished second with a 5-3 league record. Orange Lutheran was third at 4-4. In the playoffs fourth-seeded Orange Lutheran defeated Etiwanda in the first round, Aliso Niguel in the second round, Edison in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Redondo in the semifinals. Freshman Wesley Matavao has been a standout player for Orange Lutheran in the playoffs. Second-seeded JSerra beat Millikan in the first round, Rancho Cucamonga in the second round, La Canada in the quarterfinals and third-seeded Long Beach Wilson in the semifinals. In the win over Wilson, seniors Reese Brown and Tatum Johnson had 12 kills apiece for JSerra. JSerra is making its debut in the CIF-SS girls volleyball finals. Orange Lutheran is 1-1 in girls volleyball finals. The Lancers won their only CIF-SS title in the sport in 2017.

DIVISION 3

Beckman (33-5) vs. Campbell Hall (31-4), 3:30 p.m.

Outlook: Beckman, champion of the Pacific Coast League, is playing for its first CIF-SS girls volleyball championship. The Patriots lost in the 2016 final. In the playoffs, top-seeded Beckman defeated Santa Monica in the first round, Marina in the second round, Village Christian in the quarterfinals and Canyon in the semifinals. Beckman senior setter Victoria Turner is committed to the University of San Diego. Patriots senior libero Stacy Reeves committed to Texas Christian University for beach volleyball. Second-seeded Campbell Hall, champion of the Gold Coast League, in the playoffs beat San Marcos in the first round, Trabuco Hills in the second round, Hart in the quarterfinals and South Torrance in the semifinals. Campbell Hall won a CIF-SS girls volleyball championship in 2010.

DIVISION 4

El Dorado (28-5) vs. Capistrano Valley Christian (29-4), 10 a.m.

Outlook: El Dorado won the Crestview League championship. In the playoffs the Golden Hawks defeated Riverside Poly in the first round, fourth-seeded Crescenta Valley in the second round, St. Lucy’s in the quarterfinals and top-seeded West Ranch in the semifinals. El Dorado’s only previous CIF-SS girls volleyball final was a loss in 2012. Second-seeded Capistrano Valley Christian won the San Joaquin League championship with a 12-0 league record. In the playoffs the Eagles beat Westridge Prep in the first round, Kennedy in the second round, Valley Christian of Cerritos in the quarterfinals and Sunny Hills in the semifinals. Kenna Henjum, a senior, led the Eagles with 13 kills against Sunny Hills. Capistrano Valley Christian is 1-3 in CIF-SS girls volleyball finals. The Eagles won a section title in 1992. Their most recent finals appearance was a loss in 2021.
