Portola’s girls tennis team upset top-ranked and previously undefeated Mater Dei en route to a second-place finish in the Point Loma tournament on Saturday.
The Bulldogs finished as the runner-up to Mira Costa in a rain-shortened final, losing 35-29 on games after the pro set was tied in sets 2-2.
In the second round Friday, Portola edged Mater Dei — ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Division 1 — on a tiebreaker after the matches were tied 3-3.
The Bulldogs, ranked seventh in Division 1, won the tiebreaker by edging the Monarchs 7-6 on sets. The winning margin came from Portola freshman Jiah Lee, who lost to Mater Dei No. 1 player Anna Cherico 1-6, 6-2 (6-10 in the super-tiebreaker).
Portola paired reigning O.C. player of the year Kenzie Nguyen with her twin sister Kylie in doubles and received a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
The Bulldogs swept doubles as the teams of Victoria Sarabosing-Leanna Roman (6-4, 7-6) and Ayla Alhassen-Sahana Chakravarthy (6-2, 6-2) posted victories.
In the Pacific Coast League, Portola improved to 6-0 on Tuesday by defeating Beckman 12-6.
Earlier in league, the Bulldogs edged University in games 68-65 after the matches were tied 9-9. Kenzie Nguyen didn’t play in the match.
