Sport: Water polo

Year: Junior

Noteworthy: He scored 19 goals over three CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoff wins. Tonkovich, an attacker, scored nine goals in the Bulldogs’ 16-11 win over Crean Lutheran in the quarterfinals, five goals with five steals in a second-round win over Burbank and five goals in a first-round victory over Redlands East Valley. Portola plays at San Marcos in the semifinals Wednesday.

Name: Leigh Chien

School: Santa Margarita

Sport: Golf

Year: Senior

Noteworthy: The Stanford commit shot a 5-under-par 72 at Tukwet Canyon Golf Club in Beaumont to capture her first CIF-SS individual title and help the Eagles qualify for the CIF-SCGA SoCal Regional. Chien recorded seven birdies and an eagle during the finals in which only four players broke par.

Long Beach Poly’s Darius Curry (football) finished second with 7.69% of the vote.

Peninsula’s Isa Bringas (tennis) received 8.14% of the vote to finish in third place. Portola’s Kenzie Nguyen (golf) finished third at 2.33%.

Noteworthy: He scored a team-high five goals and drew four exclusions for the Sailors in their 16-6 win over Corona del Mar in their Battle of the Bay game. Catillo, a 6-foot-4 center, has committed to UCLA. Newport Harbor coach Ross Sinclair said Castillo is a force and a consistent player for the Sailors, who host Santa Margarita on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs. “He has an incredibly high water polo IQ,” Sinclair said. “He is very difficult to guard one-on-one.”

Name: Kenzie Nguyen

School: Portola

Sport: Tennis

Year: Sophomore

Noteworthy: The reigning Orange County player of the year captured her second straight Pacific Coast League singles title with an 8-1 victory against Woodbridge’s Lisa Polkanova in the finals and a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Sage Hill’s Arden Stobart in the semifinals. Nguyen, the CIF-SS singles champion last season, is 14-0 this fall.
