Convicted of conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding and obstruction of an official proceeding, both felonies, after a 17-day jury trial in Washington, the U.S. Department of Justice said, were: Erik Scott Warner, 48, of Menifee; Felipe Antonio “Tony” Martinez, 50, of Lake Elsinore; Derek Kinnison, 42, of Lake Elsinore; and Ronald Mele, 54, of Temecula.

List: Southern California residents accused or convicted in the Capitol insurrection

Warner and Kinnison were also convicted of tampering with documents or proceedings, a felony, after they erased social-media chats from their phone to hide them from a grand jury investigation.

All four were also found guilty of misdemeanor offenses of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds and disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds.

A sentencing date has not been set yet.

The men were members of the Three Percenters, a group that says it believes only 3% of American colonists took up arms against the British during the American Revolution. Some liken the current U.S. government to British authorities who infringed on civil liberties.

Ex-La Habra police chief Alan Hostetter, 5 others charged in Jan. 6 Capitol riot

Attorney Nicolai Cocis, who is representing Kinnison, said his client viewed the drive to Washington as a “road trip” to back Trump.

“While I respect the jury’s decision, I’m disappointed with the verdict,” Cocis wrote in an email. “Mr. Kinnison is a patriotic citizen who wanted to show his support for President Trump, who he believed was the rightful winner of the 2020 election. He regrets his involvement in the events of January 6 at the Capitol. We will be reviewing the verdict carefully and considering all available legal options.”

Kira Anne West, who represents Warner, declined to comment until after sentencing. Messages were sent as well to attorneys for Mele and Martinez seeking comment.

According to the indictment, Mele on Dec. 27, 2020, posted to Facebook: “January 6, 2021 — Congress meets in joint session to count the electoral votes. The Vice President, as President of the Senate, presides over the count and announces the results of the Electoral Vote. We are going to be there to show support.”

Two days, later, Mele posted to Facebook: “Soldiers hitting the highway soon to be in DC on the 6th. Ready up!”

On Jan. 2, Kinnison sent a text message to the three others asking if they wanted to bring a “shotty” and “another long iron” in the SUV that Mele had rented, the indictment says. Mele responded: “Shorter the better. Mine will be able to be stashed under the seat. I’ll bring it. 18″ barrel,” according to the indictment.

The men met at Mele’s house later that day and posed for a photograph in which they all made a hand gesture signaling affiliation with the Three Percenters, the indictment says.

On Jan. 6, the men went to the Ellipse for the rally and afterward headed toward the Capitol. As they approached the Capitol at approximately 2 p.m., federal officials said, Kinnison announced, “This is the storm of the Capitol.”

Warner then joined protesters climbing the northwest stairs to the Upper West Terrace, where police had been defending moments earlier.

At the same time, Martinez, Kinnison, and Mele advanced on a police line on the northwest lawn. Mele called out for the crowd to “Push! Push! Push!” as the officers on the lawn were surrounded, a Department of Justice news release said.

At approximately 2:13 p.m., Warner entered the Capitol through a smashed window.  When Martinez, Kinnison, and Mele heard by phone that Warner had entered the Capitol, they all moved together to ascend to the Upper West Terrace to join him, the indictment says.

As they ascended the northwest stairs, Mele shot a selfie-style video, in which he proclaims, “Storm the Capitol!” the release said.

Others then surged on the Capitol wearing tactical gear and carrying cans of bear spray, the release said. Martinez, Kinnison, and Mele were not accused of entering the building.

Cocis, the attorney for Kinnison, said some of the men were between jobs and “they thought it would be a good idea to go on a road trip. They called it like Cannonball Run 2021,” a reference to a 1981 movie about a cross-country car race.

Cocis acknowledged that the men brought with them ballistic vests, bear spray, gas masks, handguns and shotguns. But those items were for protection, Cocis said, because the men had “heard stories of Antifa attacking Trump supporters.”

More than 1,200 people have been charged so far with crimes related to the Jan. 6 breach, the DOJ said.

Fryer: Orange County’s revamped football leagues for 2024 taking shape https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/19/fryer-orange-countys-revamped-football-leagues-for-2024-taking-shape/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 23:42:33 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9624769&preview=true&preview_id=9624769 Orange County football has the usual high number of tight league races happening this season. League rivalries are about as good as they’ve ever been.

Enjoy them now, because most of these league rivalries are very unlikely to be around next season.

They could continue as nonleague games, but it’s more fun when a playoff berth or a league championship is at stake.

Orange County high schools agreed this past spring to reassemble its football leagues and conferences after this season. With the exception of the Trinity League teams, all of the Orange County 11-player football teams will placed into one basket. CalPreps’ ratings will be used to place teams into leagues. This is a football-only plan. League and conference memberships will be different for other sports.

If the 2023 football season was over, what would the leagues look like in 2024?

Let’s do this … but first a couple of items to know …

Again, the Trinity League is excluded. The four football teams with the top ratings by CalPreps will be in one league, then there will be 10 six-team leagues, and the bottom five teams in one league.

The league names have not been finalized, so the working titles are Orange County Football Conference A (OCFC A) and Orange County Football Conference B (OCFC B),etc. For this exercise, we’re going with “leagues.”

The previous two years of ratings will be used to place teams into leagues, weighted at 65 percent for the 2023 season and 35 percent weighted for the 2022 season.

Going into this week’s games, with rounded-off ratings totals, here are what the leagues would look like in 2024 (league members listed in alphabetical order):

League A: Edison, Los Alamitos, Mission Viejo, San Clemente.

League B: Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, San Juan Hills, Tesoro, Villa Park, Yorba Linda.

League C: Capistrano Valley, Cypress, El Modena, Trabuco Hills, Tustin, Western.

League D: El Dorado, Foothill, Huntington Beach, La Habra, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills.

League E: Crean Lutheran, Dana Hills, Fountain Valley, Irvine, Northwood, Orange.

League F: Aliso Niguel, Canyon, El Toro, Santa Ana, St. Margaret’s, Troy.

League G: Brea Olinda, Esperanza, Kennedy, Segerstrom, Sonora, Sunny Hills.

League H: Beckman, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Marina, Valencia, Westminster.

League I: Buena Park, Calvary Chapel, Pacifica, Portola, University, Woodbridge.

League J: Estancia; Katella, Los Amigos, Ocean View, Rancho Alamitos, Santa Ana Valley.

League K: Anaheim, Bolsa Grande, Costa Mesa, La Quinta, Loara, Santiago.

League L: Century, Godinez Magnolia, Saddleback, Savanna.

The margins could be tight when teams are placed into football leagues for the 2024 season. Through eight games of this season, using the Calpreps ratings, Irvine’s rating is 4.79 and Aliso Niguel’s is 4.78. So if the 2023 season was over now, Irvine would be the bottom team in League E and Aliso Niguel would be the top team in League F.

NOTES

CIF-SS football playoff brackets will be released Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. The 8-man football playoff brackets will be released Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. …

Yes, Orange County has 8-man football. Sage Hill, in Newport Beach, is in the Prep League and is 4-2 overall and 0-1 in league and averages 48 points a game. Vista Meridian, in Santa Ana, plays a freelance schedule and is 1-4. …

The CIF-SS Division 1 football championship game will be played at the Coliseum on Nov. 24. The first CIF championship football game played at the Coliseum was in 1923 when Long Beach Poly defeated Glendale 15-8. The most recent CIF final at the Coliseum was in 1997 when Long Beach Poly beat Mater Dei 28-25. …

It looks like the Pacific Coast Conference schools will present a proposal at Monday’s releaguing meeting that would exclude Rosary from its group. This past spring Orange County schools included Rosary in the Pacific Coast group in the approved releaguing plan for all sports outside of football. The Freeway League, which would be broken up in the passed proposal, has indicated that it would present a proposal that would keep its membership intact. …

Holly Barker of Trabuco Hills and Evan Noonan of Dana Hills, so far, are making it easy to select the Orange County boys and girls cross country athletes of the year by winning or finishing high in just about every race they enter. Barker won last weekend’s Orange County Championships and earlier finished first in the Central Park Invitational. Noonan finished first in the Orange County Championships, the Woodbridge Classic and was third in the Clovis Invitational. …

The CIF-SS Division 1 girls volleyball playoffs started Wednesday. Mater Dei swept Palos Verdes in three sets (the first was a tough one, 27-25), Los Alamitos lost to Mira Costa in three sets and Huntington Beach swept Alemany (and another tough first set there, with the Oilers winning 28-26). Division 1 pool play resumes Tuesday with Los Alamitos at Huntington Beach. Huntington Beach beat Los Alamitos in their two Surf League matches. …

Newport Harbor’s girls flag football team had its closest win of the season Wednesday, a 14-12 victory over Edison. Newport Harbor is 21-1, with the loss to Woodbridge, which Newport Harbor defeated a couple of weeks later.

NO. 3 SANTA MARGARITA (5-3, 1-2) VS. NO. 6 SERVITE (4-4, 0-3)

Where, when: Cerritos College, Friday, 7 p.m.

Analysis: This is a big Trinity League game for Servite. The Friars need a fifth win to guarantee that they will finish at .500, the threshold for being a candidate for an at-large berth in the upcoming CIF Southern Section playoffs. The top three teams in a six-team league like the Trinity League are guaranteed entry into the playoffs; teams that finish fourth, fifth and sixth can be considered for at-large berths if they are .500 or better. A look at the CalPreps ratings that CIF-SS will use to place teams into playoff divisions indicates that Santa Margarita probably is a sure thing to be in Division 1, which was a 10-team bracket last year and contained two at-large teams. Division 1 could be an eight-team bracket or a 12-team bracket this year. As for this game, Santa Margarita last week beat JSerra 34-31 on Ryan Gass’ late field goal. Servite was unable to convert its late chances last week against Orange Lutheran in a 36-33 loss. The key player in this matchup is Santa Margarita sophomore receiver Trent Mosley, who last week produced 425 all-purpose yards including 232 yards on 10 receptions. He will be the difference-maker.

Winner: Santa Margarita

NO. 1 MATER DEI (7-1, 2-1) VS. NO. 2 ORANGE LUTHERAN (5-3, 2-1)

Where, when: Orange Coast College, Thursday, 7 p.m.

Analysis: This is a matchup of the top two teams in the county rankings. While there is a large chasm between the Nos. 1 and 2 teams we know that Mater Dei is not unbeatable as was proven last week when the Monarchs lost to St. John Bosco’s near-perfect performance 28-0. The previous time Mater Dei was shut out was in 2011 by Orange Lutheran 28-0. That also is the most-recent time the Lancers beat the Monarchs. Quarterback Elijah Brown last week did not get the offensive line protection he usually is provided. The Monarchs’ top running back, Jordon Davison, was injured early and might be out for this game, but there is plenty of depth there, including speedy Nathaniel Frazier who will likely be among the top sprinters in country track this spring. Orange Lutheran running back Steve Chavez surpassed 100 rushing yards for the fourth week in a row in the Lancers’ 36-33 win over Servite. The Monarchs are an unhappy team after the Bosco loss and this might be a bad week to be in their path.

Winner: Mater Dei

TROY (5-3, 3-0) VS. SONORA (7-1, 3-0)

Where, when: La Habra High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Analysis: It’s the battle for first place in the Freeway League. Troy beat the usual league champion La Habra 27-21 two weeks ago and also has league wins over Fullerton and Buena Park. Sonora’s league wins were against Sunny Hills, Buena Park and Fullerton. In Troy’s 21-7 win over Buena Park last week the Warriors threw only eight passes while rushing for 287 yards including Declan Kai Healey’s 104 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and Caleb Huss’ 99 yards. Troy sophomore linebacker Ethan Mundt had 10 tackles with a sack against Buena Park. Sonora, which plays La Habra next week in the league finale, rushed for 331 yards in its 43-36 win over Fullerton, led by junior Anthony Abad’s 221 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Troy’s win over La Habra is the most impressive win for either team.

Winner: Troy

NO. 20 EL MODENA (4-4, 1-0) VS. NO. 23 EL DORADO (4-4, 1-0)

Where, when: Valencia High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Analysis: This one is for first place in the four-team North Hills League. They have a common opponent, La Habra. El Modena beat La Habra 38-35. El Dorado lost to La Habra 40-16. El Dorado showed how much it has improved when it beat Foothill 41-19. El Dorado won its league opener last week over Canyon 41-0 as quarterback Nate Bento and running back J.P. Murray both rushed for more than 100 yards. El Modena beat Esperanza 41-20 in a league game last week. Vanguards quarterback Xzavior Guess completed 23 of 28 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. Guess also is an excellent runner. His play-making skills will lead El Modena to the win.

Winner: El Modena

NO. 14 CORONA DEL MAR (4-4, 1-2) VS. NO. 12 NEWPORT HARBOR (3-5, 1-2)

Where, when: Newport Harbor High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Analysis: This Sunset League game is the annual Battle of the Bay. Corona del Mar has won the rivalry game 10 years in a row. Newport Harbor is the better team this year. Sailors quarterback Jaden O’Neal is developing into a star player. He has completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,801 yards and 19 touchdowns. Newport Harbor lost to county No. 10 Edison last week 31-28. Corona del Mar was overwhelmed by Los Alamitos last week 69-14. Newport Harbor was similarly overwhelmed by Los Alamitos 62-14 on Oct. 6. O’Neal was hurt late in the Edison game. The key to this game is Newport Harbor’s defense, which is allowing 32 points a game. Look for that defense to come through and for O’Neal to connect continuously with ace receivers Jordan Anderson and Josiah Lamarque to get Newport Harbor that long-awaited win and the bell trophy that goes to the victor.

Winner: Newport Harbor

The strong community ties of two north Orange County cities were on display Saturday.

Crowds lined streets in La Habra and Placentia for beloved community parades and then gathered in nearby parks for festivals.

Marching bands, a convoy honoring veterans, floats and community members paraded down Kraemer Boulevard in Placentia before cheering residents.

The parade kicked off the Placentia’s Heritage Festival, now in its 58th year, which filled Tri-City Park into the afternoon with fun for families, showcases of local businesses and nonprofits and a car show.

In La Habra, the Corn Festival that started Friday night continues through Sunday, Oct. 15.

Saturday morning, residents watched the festival’s annual parade and then filled El Centro Lions Park enjoying carnival rides and games, shopping, corn eating contests and concerts.

The entertainment continues Sunday until 9 p.m.
