As your trusty navigator through unique Day-Cations, Stay-Caytions, and Play-cations in Southern California, I’ve got a two-day adventure that’ll make your heart race and your spirit soar!

Our last escapade took us off the mainland to the beautiful Catalina Island, and now, we’re gearing up for a new expedition that’s sure to wet your whistle. Picture this: we’re about to set forth from the vibrant city of Los Angeles, on a wine country road trip like no other. Our destination? California’s most iconic wine region, and the crown jewel of American wine, Napa Valley.

If you’re one of those intrepid souls who reveled in the wine-tasting delights of Ojai during one of our past escapades, this Napa adventure is tailor-made to captivate your senses once again. So, fellow wanderers, fasten your seatbelts and join me as we embark on a grand voyage through vineyard-draped landscapes, picturesque vistas, and a world of flavors waiting to be discovered.

Let’s hit the road!

Settled over 400 miles away from Los Angeles, this world renowned wine region is located in Napa County, 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. For a swifter journey, a flight of less than 2 hours can do the trick, but then you would miss all the beauty and fun on the open road. Although the drive is a little over 6-hours, I can promise you it’s truly worth it.

While we could choose the familiar coastal route along the 101, like we did for our Solvang trip, this time, we’re opting for the inland path via the 5. This alternate route not only offers a change of scenery but also promises a fresh perspective on California’s beauty. So why rush when you can savor the journey alongside me, The Monthly Traveler?

Calling Catalina! – The Monthly Traveler https://www.ocregister.com/2023/09/19/calling-catalina/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 22:54:44 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9568707 Ahoy, fellow adventurers! It’s your old mate, The Monthly Traveler, here to whisk you away on another unforgettable voyage through the Golden State. If you’ve hit the open road with me before, you know that each of our journeys is a unique tapestry of discovery and delight. And if you’re a first-time traveler, well, prepare to have your wanderlust ignited like never before!

Our last escapade led us to the enchanting city of Solvang, where we strolled through streets that felt like they’d been plucked straight from the pages of a fairytale. But now, my friends, it’s time to pack our bags and embark on a two and a half day expedition to a destination that’s both magical and mystifying, where adventure awaits just a short boat ride away.

Where Adventure Meets Paradise

Today, we’re casting off towards the sun-kissed shores of Catalina Island, a haven of unspoiled beauty nestled in the embrace of the Pacific Ocean. But there’s something truly magical about this visit. While fall slowly descends upon the mainland, Catalina Island basks in the glory of what’s aptly named “Second Summer”.

As summer travel season winds down elsewhere, here in Catalina, it’s a special time when summery weather typically extends well into the month of November. So, let’s embark on a journey to this sun-filled haven, where adventure dances with paradise!

Island Tales: Where Legends Come to Life

Before we dive headfirst into our Catalina escapade, let’s take a moment to uncover the island’s rich history. Long before tourists flocked to its shores, the Tongva people called this island home, cradling its secrets and treasures. They lovingly referred to it as “Pimu” or “Pimugna,” and their legacy still whispers through the rustling palms.

In the late 19th century, Catalina found itself on the cusp of transformation when George Shatto, a visionary real estate speculator from Grand Rapids, Michigan, acquired the island for $200,000 (equivalent to $6.7 million today) from the Lick estate during the Southern California real estate boom in 1887. Shatto would create the settlement that would become Avalon. His dream was to develop a bustling resort community and he laid the groundwork by building the town’s first hotel, the original Hotel Metropole, and a pier.

of

Expand

However, despite Shatto’s ambitious efforts, he encountered financial difficulties and defaulted on his loan after just a few years, leading to the island’s return to the Lick estate. It was during this turbulent period that the Banning brothers, sons of Phineas Banning, entered the scene. They bought the island from the Lick estate in 1891 and committed themselves to fulfilling Shatto’s vision by constructing numerous tourist facilities.

And let’s not forget that Avalon’s history, like any grand tale, has its share of challenges. On November 29, 1915, a devastating fire ravaged half of Avalon, reducing six hotels and several clubs to ashes.

Coupled with the decline in tourism due to World War I, the Banning brothers found themselves grappling with staggering debt. In 1919, they were left with no choice but to relinquish their hold on the island, selling it in shares.

of

Expand

However, the real game-changer for Catalina came when chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., swept in to purchase the Catalina Island Company. Yes, you heard that right! Wrigley’s arrival heralded an era of transformation and growth. He invested millions, brought the Chicago Cubs to the island for spring training, and created the iconic Catalina Casino (and no, it’s not what you’re thinking!) that we will be exploring a little later.

of

Expand

Now, as we prepare to set sail for this sun-soaked paradise, you’ll discover that there’s so much more to Catalina than meets the eye. From thrilling activities to breathtaking landscapes and tantalizing cuisine, every moment promises adventure, and every corner whispers tales of wonder.

Bison, Foxes, and Eagles, Oh My!: Catalina’s Conservancy Eco Tour

As we return to solid ground after our exhilarating sailing adventure, the thrill continues on Catalina Island, but this time we’re venturing into its heartland. Our next stop is the Catalina Island Conservancy’s Eco Tour, a remarkable journey that will take us off the beaten path and deep into the island’s pristine wilderness.

With access to over 165 miles of both paved and unpaved roads, this naturalist-led Eco Tour promises a unique and bumpy ride. But it’s these very roads that will lead us to places most visitors never have the chance to explore.

Catalina Island Conservancy, the guardian of 88 percent of the island’s sprawling expanse spanning approximately 48,000 acres, stands as a testament to Philip K. Wrigley’s vision. He and his sister, Dorothy Offield, founded the conservancy to protect the island and ensure its natural beauty remains pristine—a truly unique aspect of this island paradise.

The Conservancy’s unwavering commitment to research and conservation makes it a steward of Catalina’s delicate ecosystems and a safeguard for its unique species, all amidst the Mediterranean climate that defines the island.

Our adventure will be guided by the incredibly knowledgeable Beth, a true island insider who’s brimming with information about Catalina’s rich history, unique plant life, and diverse wildlife. As we traverse unpaved roads and trails, don’t be surprised by the occasional bump and jar – it’s all part of the fun.

Keep your eyes peeled for the spectacular sight of bald eagles soaring high above, the elusive Santa Catalina Island fox, and the iconic American bison. These bison are believed to be descendants of a small herd that arrived on the island in 1924, courtesy of a movie company. Left free to roam and reproduce, they’ve thrived, and today, there are approximately 100 bison on the island. And let’s not forget the island’s rare plants and intriguing archaeological sites that Beth will introduce us to along the way.

Saddles & Vineyards: El Rancho Escondido’s Unique Blend

As we bid farewell to the charming Bistro at the Atwater, our Catalina adventure takes an exciting detour into the heart of the island’s serene interior. Our destination: El Rancho Escondido, affectionately known as “the hidden ranch,” nestled 12 miles beyond Avalon’s bustling streets.

This exclusive journey into the island’s inland beauty is a testament to the area’s rich history. We’re on the cusp of a remarkable experience that will transport us back in time to the roots of El Rancho Escondido. This historic site, founded in 1930 by Philip and Helen Wrigley, began its journey as an Arabian Horse Ranch. It was a visionary breeding program initially focused on preserving the wild horses of Catalina Island. However, its story took a fascinating twist as it evolved into a breeding ground for champion Arabian horses. These magnificent animals soon became stars on the national stage, earning acclaim at shows and competitions throughout the United States.

Today, El Rancho Escondido continues its legacy as a cherished home for the Wrigley family’s horses. However, it also plays a significant role in the family’s ventures, including the renowned Rusack Vineyards. Amidst the rugged beauty of Catalina’s interior, the ranch’s sprawling vineyards flourish, nurturing chardonnay, pinot noir, and zinfandel grapes. This unique blend of equestrian heritage and viticultural excellence defines the character of El Rancho Escondido, and we’re about to embark on an exclusive exploration led by Kathy, an experienced horse trainer who will guide us through the ranch’s treasures.

But there’s even more to this captivating journey. In the future, visitors will have the opportunity to board a vintage Flxible Bus—a delightful nod to Catalina’s history—to see the Arabian Horse Ranch and experience its fascinating story up close. Stay tuned for this exciting addition, promising a deeper connection to Catalina’s heritage.

Beyond the ranch’s rich equine history, it holds a special place in the heart of the Wrigley family. Passed down through generations, this hidden gem on the southwestern edge of Santa Catalina Island is a cherished family gathering place. The Wrigleys, known for their gum empire and their ownership of the Santa Catalina Island Company since 1919, have created a lasting legacy on this island paradise.

The Rusack family, in particular, has breathed new life into El Rancho Escondido. Alison Wrigley Rusack, a member of the Wrigley family, and her husband, Geoff, have played a pivotal role in the ranch’s rejuvenation. Under their guidance, the property has undergone renovations while preserving its iconic mission-style architecture, featuring white stucco walls and clay tile roofs—a quintessential element of Southern California’s architectural heritage.

Upon arriving at El Rancho Escondido, the first thing that will catch your eye is the timeless design of this historic establishment. Now over 90 years old, it has recently undergone a thoughtful renovation to maintain its iconic mission-style appearance. The classic white walls and clay tile roof have been carefully preserved. Notably, this renovation wasn’t just about aesthetics; it also brought the existing structures up to modern building standards. It’s a seamless blend of old-world charm and contemporary functionality, setting the stage for the captivating experience that awaits us within.

Kathy, who passionately leads our journey at El Rancho Escondido, emphasizes the unique experience: “One of the most thrilling aspects of our work here at El Rancho Escondido is the opportunity to showcase Arabian horses in this remarkable historic backdrop. It’s like breathing life back into the rich heritage of these majestic animals, and we have exciting plans to reintroduce Arabian horse exhibitions right here on Catalina Island,” she enthusiastically reveals.

While exploring the ranch, you’ll have the privilege of visiting the Saddle & Trophy Room, a fascinating repository of history. Here, you’ll encounter an array of trophies and saddles, along with a rich collection of Western memorabilia and original attire, all echoing the ranch’s equestrian heritage. Additionally, you’ll find a treasure trove of black-and-white photos documenting the Wrigley family’s connection to the island, dating back to the early 1930s. These glimpses into the past, including photos of the Wrigley family arriving on the island aboard their private DC-3, provide a captivating window into the island’s history.

But the ranch has even more to offer. A brand-new lookout deck, positioned right outside the riding ring, offers panoramic views of the ranch’s stunning surroundings. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the natural beauty of the property. This will be where future visitors will be able to enjoy shows featuring Arabian horses once again.

Another very unique offering at El Rancho Escondido that you’ll get to explore, sits atop a gentle hill just above the vineyard. This is where you’ll discover The Bishop’s Chapel, a private sanctuary built on the property. This charming chapel boasts one of the most breathtaking views in all of Catalina, offering vistas of an uninhabited hillside and the vast expanse of the ocean. It’s a serene spot that invites contemplation and reflection, making it a true hidden treasure on the island.

Jeff and Joe, life partners and kindred spirits, embarked on their winemaking journey in 1999, armed with degrees in Hotel & Restaurant Management and a shared background in food, wine, and travel. What sets Jeff and Joe apart is their hands-on approach, and the unwavering commitment to quality. They walk the rows, tasting for flavor development, and painstakingly hand-sort the highest-quality grapes. Jeff’s upbringing in Napa and Joe’s childhood immersed in food and hospitality have shaped their culinary-focused winemaking journey. Together, they create a harmonious symphony of flavors, celebrating the intimate connection between food and wine.

But it is their renowned lunch parties that truly ignite the imagination. These highly sought-after gatherings, filled with elaborate meals expertly prepared by Joe and attended to by Jeff, are the epitome of culinary artistry. Imagine yourself in their bungalow, savoring exquisitely crafted dishes, each one thoughtfully paired with the perfect wine selection. The atmosphere buzzes with the joyful camaraderie of friends and fellow wine enthusiasts, creating an unforgettable experience that lingers in the heart.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day trip or an action-packed adventure, I’ve got you covered. So buckle up, grab a snack, and let’s hit the road!

Located about 130 miles away from Los Angeles, Solvang, which means “sunny fields”, is known for its Danish architecture and heritage, making it an ideal destination for those looking for a unique getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its charming streets lined with Danish-style buildings, shops, and delicious eateries, Solvang promises a memorable experience for all.

Velkommen til Solvang!

As we make our way through the town, prepare to be amazed by its enchanting architecture and Danish charm. This quaint town was established by three visionary Danish educators – Reverend Benedict Nordentoft, Reverend J. M. Gregersen, and Professor P. P. Hornsyld. Seeking refuge from the harsh Midwestern winters, they ventured westward, where they purchased 9,000 acres of land in January 1911, giving birth to the truly unique town of Solvang.

Top SoCal Weekend Getaways to Visit Now https://www.ocregister.com/2023/05/19/top-socal-weekend-getaways-to-visit-now/ Fri, 19 May 2023 20:46:55 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9387247 Getting outside and seeing natural beauty is easier than one would think for those living in Los Angeles or the San Francisco Bay Area. One amazing thing about living in California is how big the state is and the many wonderful communities to visit and explore outside of the two most popular cities. We’ve compiled a list of the best places to get away from the congestion of the city and explore in southern and central California.

In the southern part of San Luis Obispo county is the classic beach town of Pismo Beach. It’s conveniently located midway between LA and San Francisco on white sand beaches. When thinking of Pismo Beach, one would be wise to remember the phrase “wine and waves,” due to the close proximity to wineries and the fantastic surfing scene. Ten minutes away are a number of classic wineries with beautiful welcoming tasting rooms. You can explore both smaller Mom and Pop operations to large scale vintners that produce world class Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in the Edna Valley Wine region.

The beautiful and diverse Santa Ynez Valley is only a 2.5 hour trip from the LA area. The valley is home to the towns Solvang, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, Buellton, and Ballard. The quaint town of Solvang is known as the “Danish capital of America” and is like walking through a different country. The architecture resembles that of Denmark and there are plenty of unique products that can only be found there. Los Olivos is a wine growing region with an abundance of wineries and tasting rooms.

There’s a lot of history in California especially in the small towns in the central part of the state. One such hidden gem is historic Cambria situated 4 hours north of LA and up the coast from San Luis Obispo. The town is situated next to a forest of Monterey Pines and is one of only three forests in the world. Cambria has been meticulously preserved by the local historical society and certain businesses within the downtown make you feel like you’re stepping back to the 1870s. Just past that is Moonstone Beach where you can find wave-tumbled stones and spot sea creatures like humpback whales, dolphins and otters.

Off the beaten path, three hours due north of LA, is the census designated place of Kernville. Amid the giant sequoia trees, one can go mountain biking or on hikes of various lengths. The area is also known for some of the best rafting in all of California. Be sure to take a drive in the area as the views are scenic and there’s an award-winning brewery to have a pint after you’re done driving.

For a mountain lake escape head to Lake Arrowhead northeast of downtown LA. There is plenty to do in the area known as the “Alps of Southern California. Take a ride on the paddle-wheel powered boat the Arrowhead Queen or go look at the local fauna in Heaps Arboretum. This mountain resort is the closest destination listed to LA and provides a quick nature-filled getaway.

There’s so much natural beauty in these smaller vacation destinations so go out and explore what the Golden State has to offer. Plan your trip to some of these amazing destinations by starting in Pismo Beach. Book soon as rooms will go quickly.

Best SoCal Outdoor Activities This Spring https://www.ocregister.com/2023/05/19/best-socal-outdoor-activities-this-spring/ Fri, 19 May 2023 18:40:16 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9343212 Southern California has arguably the best weather in the United States. With the rain of winter finally behind us, it’s time to get out of the house and grab some sunshine. We compiled a list of the best outdoor activities that you and your family should enjoy.

Before hitting the trail be sure to gear up with clothing fit for whatever weather you run into this Spring at the Columbia Sportswear Employee Store in West Covina. The store has the current season’s gear from Columbia’s family of brands at 40-60% below regular retail price. The store is invite only but caters to businesses of all sizes, clubs, military personnel year-round, and monthly promotions for various groups, this month it’s ‘Teacher Appreciation.’ If you or your organization is interested in signing up head here to gain access.

Hiking

Head up into the Santa Monica Mountains and take a hike in Solstice Canyon. The two-and-a-half mile trail winds through green sagebrush and beautiful trees. You may even see a waterfall that flows following rainfall. From mountaintop vista points, you’re able to see the Pacific Ocean so grab your camera.

Get your steps in and see some Hollywood history at Malibu Creek State Park. The hugely popular TV show “M*A*S*H” was supposed to be set in Korea but was actually shot up the coast from Los Angeles proper at this scenic park. The 4.75 mile loop is beautiful and well kept with a wide trail so you don’t have to squeeze past other hikers on the journey.

Parks

Griffith Park is home to one of the top 3 landmarks in all of Los Angeles, the Griffith Park Observatory. Go learn about the stars, in space not Hollywood, and then go on a hike in the sprawling hills. For the more adventurous hiker, there is a trek to the Hollywood sign for major LA tourist vibes. There are many shorter trails if you’re looking for a nice walk with a view. You can take in the sprawling city and on a clear day even the ocean.

Down in Long Beach lies big and beautiful El Dorado Park. There’s a nature center with a trail, a golf course, a disc golf course and numerous duck-filled ponds. The archery center at the park is always buzzing with archers practicing their crafts on the targets setup. This park is dog friendly with a big walking loop throughout the various sections and has two dog parks split between large and small dog sizes. Kids can ride the whimsical old-timey train and carousel. You can also rent bikes to cruise around the park in style.

Zoos

One of the best activities to do with children is go see some amazing animals at the zoo. Luckily, some of the best zoos in the world happen to be in Southern California.

Widely known as the best zoo in the US is the San Diego Zoo, a 100-acre bastion of wildlife beauty located in Balboa Park area of San Diego. This zoo is home to over 4,000 animals of 650 species. More than three million people visit this park each year. You can also visit the sprawling sister park, The San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This 1,800-acre park features giant exhibits where multiple species roam side-by-side. This park boasts the largest collection of hooved animals in the world as well as a renowned condor breeding program. Wrangle the whole family and take a visit to see wildlife from around the world in a sunny San Diego.

The Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Garden is a fantastic park set just north of downtown Los Angeles, adjacent to Griffith Park and the Greek Theater. The rolling hills (not steep) and mountainous setting really create a wild ambience for the animals and visitors alike. This is a great place to pop in for a couple of hours and get exercise. You can view over 60 endangered species and learn about conservation efforts. The animals aren’t the only spectacle, the zoo gardens are home to plants from all over the world from Mexican fan palms to Hong Kong orchid trees.

Hope you get a chance to enjoy all of the awesome spring outdoor activities that Southern California has to offer, and don’t forget to hit up and visit the Columbia Sportswear Employee Store in West Covina for the perfect spring gear! Through the end of July, mention this article to gain access to the store.
