Joan Osborne opens up about the most personal record she’s ever made ahead of local show https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/08/joan-osborne-opens-up-about-the-most-personal-record-shes-ever-made-ahead-of-local-show/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 16:30:00 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9661644&preview=true&preview_id=9661644 Following a tough year in 2022 that included a milestone birthday, the end of a long-term romantic relationship, a teenage daughter leaving the nest and dealing with her aging mother’s signs of Alzheimer’s, singer-songwriter Joan Osborne poured it all into her new album.

And that’s why it’s no surprise that the now 61-year-old multi-Grammy-nominated singer, who shot to fame with her 1995 hit “One of Us,” says it’s the most personal record she has ever made.

“I think part of it has to do with being the age I am and not feeling this necessity to sort of protect myself so much, or to hide and be mysterious in the songwriting,” Osborne said during a phone interview from her New York home as she was recovering from oral surgery just ahead of a national tour in support of her eleventh album, “Nobody Owns You.”

“I was going through a lot of different things within my family and relationships and I thought this is all that I can think of now. So instead of trying to separate this out and make music that is not about this, I’m going to try to use all of this as material and try to turn this very tumultuous and often painful stuff into something beautiful,” she said.

The tour lands the soulful singer at the recently opened Venice West venue in Venice on Thursday, Nov. 16. The evening will feature the new songs and her famous hits.

Osborne reached international fame with her album “Relish” that included the hit “One of Us,” which topped the charts in several countries, earned multiple Grammy nominations and was used as the theme song for the hit television series “Joan of Arcadia.”

“I do still enjoy playing it live. If it was a different kind of song, like a booty-shake-type of song I might be tired of it. But if it had to be one song, that’s a pretty interesting song to be the one I’m known for,” she said.

As that single climbed the charts, it was all a whirlwind time for the Kentucky-born singer.

“It was all a little bit like a crazy dream at the time,” Osborne said. “I also was so gratified that the record seemed to be connecting with so many people. It sold millions of copies and it seemed to really be having this emotional impact on people and I think that’s what every artist dreams of, to have that kind of reach and affect so many people.”

In her decades-long career Osborne has touched on many genres including rock, soul, pop, R&B, blues and country. The new 12-track album, which was released in September, leans heavily on the Americana and rootsy vibe with banjos, lap steel guitars, piano, organ and baritone guitar in the mix with a bit of a pop polish wrapped in her deeply personal songs.

“It’s still sometimes difficult to sing the songs live because I’m still very close to those feelings, but I have to say I’m most proud of the fact that the songs are very honest and very simple and straightforward,” she said.

One of those songs is a sort of message to her past self titled “I Should’ve Danced More.”

“That sort of taking stock process led me to this thought of you know I’ve done way too much cleaning in my life, I just need to dance more,” she said.

The title track “Nobody Owns You” is a song many parents of older teens can relate to. It’s a message about female empowerment, which Osborne wrote for her college-bound daughter who, at the moment, may not be that interested in listening to her mother.

“As much as we’ve come so far in supporting our girls and our young women and telling them they could be anything in the world, I still think they live in this culture where they think nobody can be mad at them and they have to please everyone and they have to put other people’s need before their own,” she said.

“My daughter is a teenager so she’s not really that open to listening to what I have to say to her, so that’s kind of frustrating. But I have an outlet where I can put these words into songs. So maybe she’ll listen to it now or at some point in the future,” she continued.

There are also odes to her mother in songs like “Secret Wine,” which is about her mother’s dementia and dealing with the end of her life.

“I think I feel glad that I was able to put that level of honesty in the songs and in the performance, too,” Osborne said.

And as far as her recent surgery goes, which was for the removal of a cyst in her jaw that required the extraction of a wisdom tooth, it was really nothing compared to the emotional year she’s had.

“I’m a little bit shaky, I had to have oral surgery last week and I’m still not 100 percent back, but I will be by the time I come to Venice,” she said.

Presley Tennant’s ready to get down with a hometown crowd at Country Campout Weekend https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/07/presley-tennants-ready-to-get-down-with-a-hometown-crowd-at-country-campout-weekend/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 15:30:09 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9659496&preview=true&preview_id=9659496 The inaugural Country Campout Weekend, scheduled to take place at Prado Regional Park in Chino on Nov.10-12, holds special importance for country artist Presley Tennant. Hailing from the neighboring city of Norco, this performance is very much a homecoming.

“There is seriously nothing better than playing in your hometown,” Tennant said during a Zoom interview ahead of the festival. “Chino is another city I feel like I grew up at. I used to play soccer growing up over in Chino, so I know the area and it feels like home. There’s definitely no better feeling than playing near my hometown because, I mean, it’s so cheesy to say, but there’s a special place in your heart with certain areas and whenever I get to play in these cities … those are my most favorite shows.”

Tennant’s upbringing in Norco, famously known as Horsetown USA, immersed her in the world of country music. Inspired by the sounds and powerful vocals of female artists like Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood, Tennant recognized the importance of forging her own musical identity. Thanks to her hometown, she found both the inspiration to flourish and the encouragement to soar, as friends and family rallied behind her decision to make her mark as a finalist on Season 16 of NBC’s “The Voice” during her teenage years.

“You know, I was only 16 years old when I got on ‘The Voice,’” she said. “It was a huge milestone in my life and I had no clue what was going to unfold from that. Looking back, it was kind of the start for everything else. I didn’t really know who I was or what music I was going to make, but from being on that show, I found myself. And as of late, it’s coming through more than ever.”

Now, Tennant is ready to introduce a fresh musical chapter to fans, with plans to release several new singles in the coming months, including the debut of some unreleased songs during her Country Campout Weekend performance. The setlist will also reflect a change in energy, as it now encompasses songs that resonate with her current stage of life, in which she’s prioritizing personal growth.

“I started releasing music at just 18 and to see where I’m at now is a completely different person, I feel like a woman now,” Tennant said. “As I grow, the music grows, and I become more outgoing and more myself, and I can put that in my songwriting. Even with the covers I’m going to do, it might not be what people expect, but it makes sense to me with where I’m at.”

Joining Tennant is headliner Chris Janson, as well as other acts like Drew Baldridge, Sean Stemaly, Catie Offerman, Daniel Bonte and Joe Peters. The Saturday, Nov. 11 concert event will also feature line dancing lessons, axe throwing, lakeside yoga, a redneck rodeo, mechanical bull rides, tailgating games like cornhole and horseshoes, among other activities. Tennant said fans will see her out enjoying some of the festival amenities as well.

“Of course, I’ll be on stage singing my heart out, but fans can expect I’ll be out in the crowds after the show, watching artists I love, but also enjoying the other activities there,” she confirmed. “Again, I’m a cheesy person, and there’s nothing better than being involved in something like this.”

These shows follow the band’s reunion performances at the When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas on October 21-22. Special guest Winona Fighter will also be accompanying the band on both nights in Anaheim.

After the tour, he returned home to celebrate his 40th birthday with a special show at the House of Blues Anaheim. During that show, he brought out the original members of Something Corporate, who performed a handful of songs together for the first time in nearly a decade.

Now in its third year, Punk in the Park partnered with Costa Mesa-based skate shoe and apparel company Vans to bring in its vert ramp and several pro skateboarders and BMX riders including Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi, Bucky Lasek, Lizzie Armento and Josh Borden. Throughout the day, these athletes put on a show of their own, catching the attention of the masses with impressive high-flying moves on the narrow and steep ramp.

Later in the day, Scowl, Drain, Suicide Machines, Guttermouth, Narcoleptic Youth, The Dickies and GBH got the crowd fired up for evening sets by Circle Jerks and day one headliner, Pennywise.

Sunday’s Punk in the Park lineup includes Descendents along with Goldfinger, Buzzcocks, Lawrence Arms, The Dwarves, The Queers, Throwrag, Elvis Cortez, The Side Eyes, Teenage Bottlerocket, The Casualties, The Defiant and more.

Kiss delivers a rock and roll spectacle one last time at the Hollywood Bowl https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/04/kiss-delivers-a-rock-and-roll-spectacle-one-last-time-at-the-hollywood-bowl/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 17:30:03 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9655270&preview=true&preview_id=9655270 Two songs into the night the legendary hard rock band Kiss got booed by the sold-out crowd at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Friday. Not, mind you, because the show wasn’t already the ridiculously over-the-top spectacle that Kiss has perfected in its 50 years on the road.

The curtain dropped for “Detroit Rock City” to reveal Paul StanleyGene Simmons and Tommy Thayer on hanging platforms 30 feet above the stage, fireworks flashing around them, and drummer Eric Singer at the back of the stage as flame cannons blasted around him.

Then “Shout It Loud,” with lasers bouncing inside the bandshell, bright blurs of fireworks shooting off its top, our face-painted, costumed heroes — Stanley the Starchild, Simmons the Demon, Thayer the Spaceman and Singer the Cat – like characters inside a colorful and very, very loud video game.

No complaints at all — and then Stanley started to speak.

“Man, so here we are,” he said as fans whooped and hollered. “And this is the last time we’ll be playing Los Angeles.”

Uh-oh. That definitely was not what anyone wanted to hear, but there — amid well-intentioned boos and shouts of no! — it was: The End of the Road Tour really is the end of touring for Kiss, Stanley and Simmons, the two founding members in the band, insist.

Do you believe them? I mean, this is the third time I’ve seen Kiss on this farewell tour in the last five years. But Stanley is 71, and Simmons is 74, so maybe this night, Kiss’s Hollywood Bowl debut, is it for Los Angeles, Southern California and the entire state.

Before the show began, fans at the Hollywood Bowl, many of whom arrived with faces painted like the Kiss characters, said they hope this ends up like most rock and roll retirements do — a head fake, a misdirection, and prelude to a one-off or reunion show in the future.

David and Judy Flores of Chandler, Arizona arrived at the Bowl costumed as the Demon and Starchild after catching Kiss at Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms on Wednesday. Friday was the seventh time they’d seen the band on its farewell tour. For David Flores, it was about the 40th time he’d seen the band.

“I’ve been listening to them since I was 7 years old,” said David Flores, resplendent in his Gene Simmons cosplay. He’s heard that Stanley and Simmons both plan to tour with their own bands, and Singer will play in Stanley’s.

“One way or another they’re going to be around,” he said.

“And we’re going to be there,” Judy Flores added.

Back on stage, Stanley tried to cheer up fans like the Flores’, who said they’d be devastated if this is it.

“I know it’s sad but it’s also a joyous time,” he said. “A time to celebrate everything we’ve done together. Kiss Army, we love you!”

That brought the cheers thundering back through the amphitheater, and show rolled on, 22 songs over two hours and 10 minutes, most of them the hits you wanted to hear, with a few odds and ends from the latter-day albums scattered in.

Highlights early in the set included “Deuce” and “War Machine.” Stanley and Simmons taught us our very difficult vocal parts on “I Love It Loud” – “Hey-ey-ey-ey yeah!” – and “Say Yeah” – “Yeah, yeah, yeah!”

If you weren’t there, but had seen one of the earlier Southern California shows on The End of the Road Tour, you’d already seen all the set pieces. Thayer’s guitar solo had him fighting off the UFO-like hexagonal overhead video screens, firing red sparks from the neck of his guitar to knock them out of commission.

Simmons grabbed a flaming torch and breathed a blast of fire during “I Love It Loud,” and later, during the bass solo that led into the ominously fun “God of Thunder,” grinned malevolently as he opened his mouth to let blood run down his flickering tongue and over the kabuki-white face-paint on his chin.

All of this is good and goofy fun, the kind of comic book stylings long a part of Kiss’s showmanship.

And if this was your first show, well, mind blown, right?

“We get to see them live – not a lot of people can do that now,” said Luis Tamayo of Bell Gardens, who came with his friend Larry Jimenez of Downey, both of them for their first Kiss show.

Morgan Cavanaugh of Toluca Lake brought the whole family – wife Juli Cavanaugh and sons Quinn, 13, and Sawyer, 10, with all four made-up like one of the four Kiss characters. He’d been a fan since second grade, though this was the first show for all.

“We all loved the theatrics and the music was good,” he said.

It almost feels unnecessary, or even mean, to quibble over a show like this. But OK, the middle lagged a little with too many solos and a couple of songs – “Psycho Circus,” I’m looking at you – from the later albums that remain less known.

But the show ended strongly, as it has throughout this tour, with Stanley flying on a zipline from the stage over the audience to a remote stage in the terrace boxes. “Love Gun,” with terrific backing vocals by boys back in the bandshell, and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You,” the Kiss-does-disco song were both standouts.

As was “Black Diamond,” which saw Stanley fly back to the stage to close out the main set.

The encore opened with Singer seated at a bedazzled grand piano to sing and play “Beth,” the ballad that is the band’s only No. 1 hit, followed by “Do You Love Me.”

There’s really only one way for a Kiss show to end and with “Rock and Roll All Nite”— confetti cannons at the start, the crowd roaring the chorus as Simmons sang lead — the show ended with the thrilling spectacle Kiss really kind of created in the rock world.

Confetti blasted again midway through it, and after Stanley gave his guitar a goodbye kiss, he smashed it on the stage, triggering blasts of metallic purple streamers over the audience. The stage went dark, five minutes of fireworks erupted from the top of the bandshell, and Kiss was gone, probably, maybe for good.

This year marks the ninth edition of the festival, which has evolved from its humble beginnings in 2012 when it debuted at Club Nokia (now The Novo) in downtown Los Angeles and was known then as OFWGKTA Carnival. What started as a small gathering has blossomed into a larger-than-life carnival experience, a testament to Tyler’s vision. The festival blends music with the excitement of carnival rides and games. Past editions have featured acts such as Drake, Action Bronson, Odd Future, Frank Ocean, Solange, Brockhampton, Daniel Caesar, 21 Savage and Lil Wayne.

The festival’s journey has not been without its challenges, as COVID-19 and Tyler’s busy touring schedule led to a three-year hiatus. However, fans were hungry for its return as the two-day festival is officially sold out, but resale tickets are available via secondary sellers if you’d still like to attend.

Here’s what you need to know before heading out for Camp Flog Gnaw.

The Lineup

The Camp Flog Gnaw lineup caters to a diverse audience of music lovers, spanning rap, R&B and indie music. This year’s festival boasts a roster of nearly 40 acts.

One of the biggest performances will undoubtedly come from R&B superstar SZA, who recently dazzled audiences during her Kia Forum stop on her sold out SOS Tour. Fans can expect chart-topping hits like “Snooze” and “Kill Bill” to be in the setlist. Another highlight will be The Hillbillies, the duo composed of Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem, who happen to be cousins. Their collaboration on tracks such as “Family Ties” and “Range Brothers” from Keem’s 2021 record “Melodic Blue” has fans speculating there will be a new record coming within the next year.

Of course, Tyler, the Odd Future leader and mastermind behind it all will be another big draw. Fresh off the release of the deluxe version of “Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale” earlier this year, Tyler’s performance will likely include hits off his latest release while including fan favorites like “See You Again” and “Answer.”

Other acts scheduled to perform include Lil Yachty, Ice Spice, Clipse, Kali Uchis, Earl Sweatshirt, Rex Orange County, Syd, PinkPantheress, Dominic Fike, Willow, Ravyn Lenae, Turnstile, Paris Texas, Beabadoobee, Baby Rose, Cuco, Toro y Moi and more.

Games, rides and other perks

All of the games and rides fans have come to expect from the Camp Flog Gnaw experience will return including the Ferris wheels, swings and other attractions.

Rides are included in the festival pass fees, but game tickets are sold separately. VIP pass holders will get the extra perks with their tickets including a backpack, water bottle, snow globe, mini helmet, carabiner, baseball keychain and a pin. Super VIP pass holders can expect to snag a SE 29” Golf Wang Big Flyer Bike, Converse x Golf Wang custom shoes, a Camp Flog Gnaw blanket, fanny pack, mug and pin.

Times and rules

The festival is open to all-ages, with children under five granted free access with paid adult. There are no ins and outs of the festival grounds. There’s no clear bag policy in place at this event and medium-sized backpacks and smaller purses and handbags are allowed.

Attendees can expect gates to open up at noon each day and for the shows to end around 11 p.m. The Camp Flog Gnaw daily set times will be announced on all social media channels closer to the event.

YouTube Theater celebrates its second anniversary and nearly 10,000 chicken fingers sold https://www.ocregister.com/2023/11/03/youtube-theater-celebrates-its-second-anniversary-and-nearly-10000-chicken-fingers-sold/ Fri, 03 Nov 2023 15:00:34 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9652977&preview=true&preview_id=9652977 YouTube Theater in Inglewood just celebrated its second anniversary in September and while it might not seem like a significant milestone, Russell Gordon, vice president and general manager of the venue, said it certainly feels like one.

“It’s incredible to see where we are today because it feels like we’ve been on this amazing journey for even longer,” he said during a recent phone interview.

The 6,000-capacity theater, which sits under the same canopy but adjacent to SoFi Stadium just across the American Airlines Plaza, took a little extra time to open due to delays in construction and stops in production due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Officially opening on Sept. 3, 2021 with the Hollywood Black Comedy Festival led by Deon Cole, the venue has gone on to be recognized within the Southern California concert and events circuit as it has now hosted more than 200 shows including prominent artists from a variety of genres within the rock, pop, hip-hop, Latin, K-pop and country music worlds.

Artists like Jack White, Devo, The Isley Brothers, Pesado, Smokey Robinson, Motionless in White, The B-52’s, Lil Nas X, Rosalía, Tom Jones, Demi Lovato, Wiz Khalifa, Air Supply, Amy Poehler and Tina Fay as part of the Netflix is a Joke Festival and more have all graced the stage. Upcoming shows include English rock band New Order on Nov. 15; Spanish singer and composer Joaquin Sabina on Nov. 22; singer-songwriter LP on Nov. 24; Japanese supergroup The Last Rockstars on Nov. 29; R&B star Brent Faiyaz on Dec. 5-6 and “Dancing with the Stars” judge Derek Hough’s “Symphony of Dance” on Dec. 29.

When conceptualizing the master plan for YouTube Theater, it was paramount for both the brand and the team to ensure that the essence of Inglewood was embodied. From the music and events to even the culinary offerings, every detail was meticulously crafted. The venue’s dedication to this vision has been evident, particularly with booking shows like two sold-out nights with regional Mexican and Latin pop artist Peso Pluma, who received an overwhelming response from fans nearby and within the neighboring communities.

“Los Angeles is a huge destination with so many different cultures and representation,” Gordon said. “So it was important for us to make sure that we had a diverse programming methodology. And for us as a team, it’s also keeping in mind that we’re in the heart of Inglewood, which is a very diverse community already. It’s important to us to make sure that we’re repping the community by finding artists like Peso Pluma, so that they have nearby destinations to easily catch them, and that it feels like a part of their home. The fact that we can bring the community together in that way, is a game changer and one of the most important aspects of YouTube Theater.”

For Gordon, what sets YouTube Theater apart is its ability to unite fans with artists. He said the venue accomplishes this by ensuring that every seat provides an intimate experience, with even the furthest seat in the house situated just 164 feet away from the stage.

Then there’s the food and beverage aspect. As the Hollywood Park campus continues to build up around SoFi Stadium and new dining options will be cropping up, YouTube Theater has offered a myriad of food and drink options, the most popular of which has been a classic music venue staple: chicken tenders and fries. According to the venue, it has sold nearly 10,000 chicken fingers since opening day.

They’ve also sold more than 100,000 Modelo beers, making it the top-selling beverage on site, followed by its LA Rita, which has sold over 16,000 drinks in mason jar-style glasses. Even with the addition of elevated cuisine including pastas, flatbreads and fancy cocktails, Gordon said the fans are still reaching for the classics. “That’s something we will never take away,” he added.

While originally constructed to host things like concerts and Esports events, YouTube Theater has diversified its portfolio by including things like the 11th Annual NFL Honors on February 10, 2022, the Billboard Women In Music awards show on March 2, 2022, and its upcoming role as the host for the “Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop,” a two-hour concert special that will be filmed on Nov. 8 and later aired on CBS on Dec. 10.

“Of course, we’re a concert venue first, but there is certainly a lot of programming throughout the industry and especially in Los Angeles that could use a shiny new home and we really strive to make it incredible for these events,” Gordan said. “We’ve been fortunate to host these events and I think that that goes to show that we have truly cultivated the time to build strong relationships in the industry and in the community to show them what we can do, and that they are taking chances on that now.”

When it comes to the future of YouTube Theater, the plan is to continue to bring the city of Inglewood together, and to bring attendees more of what they love.

“As this becomes a true destination in California, it’s going to be really exciting to see the kinds of things that we’re able to be a part of and that we’re able to do here,” Gordon said. “We want to service our evolving community in Inglewood, and that’s the main thing.”
