How metal band Slaughter hit the jackpot by playing casinos https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/31/how-metal-band-slaughter-hit-the-jackpot-by-playing-casinos/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 15:00:15 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9647783&preview=true&preview_id=9647783 Mark Slaughter, the lead singer of the hair metal band Slaughter, grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada where some of the music industry’s most iconic acts, such as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, elevated their stardom by contributing to a budding casino entertainment industry.

As a Vegas local, Slaughter saw a different side of the city that was rapidly changing, but never really saw himself performing at casinos in his hometown and beyond.

“It was green acres of lights when I was a kid, and it certainly has exploded into the big city Las Vegas is now,” Slaughter said in a recent phone interview. “When I grew up there, everybody knew everybody, and it was a small little town. I never would have imagined that we would be able to play casinos. We’ve played several places out there, including the Golden Nugget, which is the Sinatra room, and it’s kind of cool because that’s where he used to do his show every night. You realize the size of the showroom and what people were seeing, and you get a chance to sit in the dressing room and see how they did it up for him. It’s just a really cool experience coming from there.”

Slaughter is on tour with several casino stops nationwide, including Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in Highland on Saturday, Nov. 11. The band will perform as part of a Veterans Day charity event with proceeds from ticket sales benefitting U.S. Vets, a national organization that provides critical services for veterans. There will also be drawing for an autographed guitar signed by the band.

“The Indian casinos have been doing a fantastic job across the nation,” Slaughter said. “It’s funny because just a few years back, I became friends with Tony Orlando, and he told me we were going to be playing the casinos before we knew it. I was like, ‘Huh, that’s funny. He thinks we’re going to play in casinos.’ I always had a feeling that it just wasn’t my place, and now here we are doing it. So, Orlando was right. This type of music is the new music for casinos.”

In his formative years, Slaughter knew he wanted to be a performer. He taught guitar lessons and had a soprano voice that fit just about any choir. He credits the development and mastery of his voice to his late high school choir teacher, Ken Tuttle, who also worked with singer-songwriter Gwen Stefani.

“There are educators who really make such a difference in a kid’s life, and I’m sure if you talk to Gwen, she’d say the same thing,” he said of Tuttle. “These are the people that really gave you those affirmations like you’re doing a great job, and that’s what we’re losing in our schools now, and it’s so sad.”

Slaughter caught the ear of the band’s current bassist and co-founder of Slaughter, Dana Strum. They both joined the band Vinnie Vincent Invasion, but after several issues, the project disbanded, leaving Strum and Slaughter to form their own band with the help of drummer Blas Elias and the late lead guitarist Tim Kelly, who died in a car accident in 1998.

The rise of Slaughter was unique for a multitude of reasons. For one, they were a hair metal band out of Las Vegas while most of the scene was bursting out of Los Angeles in the ’80s. Strum told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that also during that time few rock bands were being booked at casinos.

The band also released their first record, “Stick It to Ya,” during the turn of the decade when grudge and alternative music were taking over the airwaves and most of the timeslots on MTV. Despite the odds, the band proved their success in the early ’90s by opening their first show for rock giants Kiss and having their first album go gold after a single live performance.

When asked about any grudge and metal rivalries, Slaughter said though there were contrasts in style and presentation, he acknowledges and respects their musical contributions.

“(During) the grunge era, there was some depressing stuff in there, and our music is a light and love and of a different mindset,” he said. “I don’t slag any of the alternative bands that came forward because they have their place and sound, and quite honestly, I enjoy them just like the next person. But, I think that life should be celebrated, which is the key point with the span of Slaughter. We’re all about the celebration, more than getting caught up with what’s wrong with the world.”

Slaughter credits the band’s longevity and resilience with being able to celebrate in moderation and their ability to stay away from substances that would veer them off course from their love of performing. They can more easily remember the big moments and while there have been many with fans throughout the years, a strange and random gig at a local Taco Bell stands out.

“At the time, I made the comment that we bought houses in Las Vegas and said we know it’s going to be a great area because there’s a Taco Bell there, and the CEO thought it was the funniest thing,” Slaughter recalled. “So we said we would do it as a charity event, and we did a tie-in where every ten cents on every drink would be donated to the Miami Drug Abuse Coalition, and we raised thousands of dollars just by doing the show.”

For Slaughter, the spirit of giving back is something that genuinely stays on his mind, and it was a big reason he wanted to perform the Veterans Day charity event at Yaamava’. His father was also a veteran who served after World War II. He said there are many challenging aspects of life that veterans deal with mentally and physically after they serve that many people may not always see or understand.

“What we really love to do is entertain and to have a good time,” he said. “For this show, we’re going to go out and entertain for the vets. We’re going to make some great memories. So come on out and have some fun with us, and in the meantime, shake somebody’s hand or hug those who have sacrificed for our country.”

How Southern California casinos are celebrating Halloween https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/18/how-southern-california-casinos-are-celebrating-halloween/ Wed, 18 Oct 2023 16:15:38 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9622146&preview=true&preview_id=9622146 Halloween can be associated with classic concoctions ranging from wicked witches’ potions to the creepy creations of mad scientists like Doctor Frankenstein. Still, this year’s Halloween cocktails at Southern California casinos could easily be among the most frightful.

Harrah’s Resort Southern California mixologists Tiffany Ten-Napel, Alexa Arenz and Grace Skarra, casino operations manager of beverage and slots, worked together to craft this year’s spooky cocktails at the Valley Center property.

The effort resulted in three Halloween cocktail specials, including the Nightmare on Bourbon Street, La Bruja and the Forbidden Potion. The cocktails include candy eyeballs, a black salted rim and a vile of mystery liquid that changes the drink’s color. Although these specialty drinks aren’t brewed over a cauldron, altar or made with any sacrificial elements, they are still shrouded in the eeriness and style that reminds adults that Halloween is just as much their holiday as it is for the kids.

A look inside Morongo Casino Resort & Spa’s new high-limit slot room https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/04/a-look-inside-morongo-casino-resort-casinos-new-high-limit-slot-room/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 16:30:55 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9595772&preview=true&preview_id=9595772 The high-limit slot room at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon is officially open.

The new room takes the place of Mystique, which was once a lounge space with a stage for live music. The space now houses 170 state-of-the-art slot machines with high-limit denominations between $1-$300 and is located by the valet entrance. It also includes a new bar with tabletop poker where guests can watch various televised sporting events across six television screens. It also includes a separate smoking room with a television.

But what truly makes it unique is the smart window tint that provides guests with the ambiance and views of the mountains and privacy. It’s a feature that has yet to be seen in many Southern California casinos that often don’t use much natural light in their indoor spaces.

Simon Farmer, executive director of marketing at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, said that the location for the high-limit room was put next to the valet for convenience and that some of their high-limit players vetted the slot machine choices.

“All the way down to a personal level, we know there are games in there that they want to play, so we make sure that those games are always operational and we’re ready to serve them at a moment’s notice,” Farmer said.

The bar’s specialty menu includes a Morongo Limousine Margarita ($12), an Italian Manhattan ($11) and an Estate Mojito ($11). For small bites, the bar offers menu items such as the Angus Beef Sliders ($18), Fish Tacos ($15) and bigger eats like the Filet Mignon ($37). However, if guests in the high-limit room prefer another eatery or drink from the property, they can push the service button on the machines and a staff member will take their order.

To celebrate the opening of the new room, the casino will host several different promotions, including $10,000 in cash and a 2023 Lucid Air Pure beginning at midnight on Oct. 6 until 7:59 p.m. on Oct. 8. In addition, every Saturday and Sunday from Oct. 14 to Oct. 29, two Morongo Rewards members will be drawn every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the opportunity to win up to $2,500 in cash.

Comedian and TV host Jay Leno talks shop at Yaamava’ Resort & Casino https://www.ocregister.com/2023/10/04/comedian-and-tv-host-jay-leno-talks-shop-at-yaamava-resort-casino/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 15:15:09 +0000 https://www.ocregister.com/?p=9595667&preview=true&preview_id=9595667 Though late night television host, writer and comedian Jay Leno is a well-known automobile enthusiast, don’t ask him what his favorite vehicle is.

“I get that one a lot,” Leno said of the things fans ask him as he was preparing to host an in-person car giveaway at Yaamava’ Resort & Casino in Highland on Monday, Oct. 2. “But, you know, I like cars and have about 200 and change.”

That evening, one lucky casino patron rode out in a 2023 Rolls Royce Ghost valued at $404,719.28, while four runner up finalists had the chance to earn $3,500-$20,000 in free play.

“I don’t have any Rolls Royce, so maybe I’ll win it,” Leno joked before making the night’s final drawing.

“Oh, I picked my own name! What are the odds,” he said. “It’s exciting because there’s so many horrible things in the world, so it’s nice to be able to see people be happy and have fun, and it’s like, when do you even get a chance to sit in a Rolls Royce let alone win one.”

As a comic, Leno made his first appearance on late night television in the late ’70s and in 1986, he became a frequent substitute host for Johnny Carson on “The Tonight Show.”  He replaced Carson in 1992, becoming the host for NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” He left briefly in 2009 as Conan O’Brien took over, but returned a year later. He hosted his final episode on Feb. 6, 2014.

In 2021, he led the revival of the “You Bet Your Life” game show with his co-host Kevin Eubanks, who worked alongside him on “The Tonight Show.” He also produces and hosts the CNBC primetime show and web series, “Jay Leno’s Garage,” which focuses on car and motorcycle reviews.

Before Leno announced the Rolls Royce winner, he spoke to Southern California News Group about his time as a Rolls Royce employee, his views on electric vehicles, the state of comedy and more. The following conversation was edited for space and clarity.

Q: Have you ever driven a Rolls Royce?

Leno: Oh yeah, I used to work for Rolls Royce. I was like a new car prep guy. I’d put on the license plates, polish it for the guy, that sort of stuff. They used to call it a lot boy, and they’d say, ‘The guy is here. Bring the car around,’ and you’d burn rubber in the parking lot.

Q: You recently drove Raglan’s Tesla-powered Land Rover Defender. What was that like?

Leno: It was interesting. It’s quiet, has a lot of power and is faster than the stock one. It doesn’t burn any gas, so it’s fine with me.

Q: What are your thoughts about electric vehicles and the focus on them in the current car market?

Leno: To me, it’s another alternative. I mean, gas is almost $7 a gallon in California, and electric cars run you maybe 10-20 percent of that. I drove down here in a Tesla, and to come here and back, that would’ve been $120 in gas. With electricity, it’s still expensive, but nowhere near as bad.

Q: As a car enthusiast, what is it like to work on “Jay Leno’s Garage?”

Leno: Great. We’ve done “Jay Leno’s Garage” on YouTube for 13 years, and then we had that celebrity version on broadcast TV that was like a rolling “Tonight Show.” We’d have people like George Clooney talk about what kind of car they like, go for a drive and talk about how it was the car you first made love in or whatever it would be (for each celebrity).

Q: To shift gears a bit, I know you’re on tour and have performed around the country in many places, including at casinos in Southern California and in Las Vegas. How do you feel at those casino shows performing as a comedian?

Leno: I performed here, and it’s a great room. This is Vegas, except it’s not in Vegas, which is nice. This is as nice as any casino you’d see in Vegas, and it’s cool that you don’t have to go all the way there to experience it. I’ve been doing standup for 50 years and was lucky enough to get “The Tonight Show,” but even then, I’d be on the road every weekend. You have to keep doing it. You can’t do it and stop and then suddenly do it again. If you’re carrying material around in your head, you’ve go to do it all.

Q: Do you have any favorite casino games?

Leno: I’m not a gambler. If you work at these places, you shouldn’t gamble.

Q: As a casino reporter, I can guess I can relate to that, too, right?

Leno: I rest my case.

Q: In this stage of your career, are there things you find funny now that you maybe you didn’t before?

Leno: It’s actually the other way around. It’s stuff that we found funny before that you can’t do now. But you know it’s not bad, it’s like everything else. In the old days, there were women and gay jokes, and it’s probably better we don’t do those anymore. I think you can tease and poke fun at people. It’s a classic (case of) if they’re laughing with you and you’re not laughing at them, I don’t find it that hard. Everyone likes being teased and that sense of humor. You have to know when you crossed the line, and it’s a fine line in comedy.
