Hapa Bakery opens in Brea

Just when you thought you’d seen enough sugar to sink the Titanic again, there’s more!

Hapa Bakery is open in Brea. The store is in its “soft opening” phase on Birch Street, taking the place of shuttered Starbucks.

The business was created by two Cal State Fullerton graduates, who wanted to put a little something extra in their baked goods. Hanayo Martin and Akemi Lee specialize in alcohol-infused cupcakes that come with seductive names like Gonna Get Lucky Tonight (chocolate and whiskey) or the Strawberries and Champagne cupcake, which is infused with sparkling wine.

Their first cupcake shop opened at 105 W. Amerige Ave. in Fullerton.

Brea address: 260 W. Birch St. Suite D

Irvine Barclay Theater director stepping down

Jerry Mandel is stepping down as president of Irvine Barclay Theatre, effective Dec. 31.

A 26-year veteran in performing arts, he will be succeeded by Craig Springer, the theater’s executive vice president.

Mandel will serve as president emeritus on the board of directors as vice chair of capital campaigns and will fill an advisory role at UC Irvine where he spent 20 years as an administrator.

He is credited with bringing the Barclay through the pandemic, a long period in which entertainment venues were shuttered.

“I have been blessed to have had a wonderful career,” Mandel said. “As former president of the now Segerstrom Center for The Arts, I had the joy of completing a world-class concert hall. As president of the Barclay, I was fortunate to see the theater emerge and evolve into one of Orange County’s premier venues. Now, I am pleased to announce that I will be returning to my roots at UC Irvine where it all began.”
