We asked our photographers to pick their favorite moments from September 2022, and here are some they selected.

From surf competitions to an airshow to the preparations for a new art museum, Orange County was busy with events in September.

With the Pacific Ocean and the Huntington Beach Pier in the backdrop, after marching down Main Street proudly waving their country flags, about 250 surfers came together to mix the grains from their local beaches during the “Sands of the World” opening ceremony of the ISA World Surfing Games. It is the first time the event has been held in Surf City since 2006.

The eight-day, Olympic-style competition brought wave riders from 50 countries, including well-known surfing regions such as Australia, and places not known for their surf scene such as Saudi Arabia.

Over in Costa Mesa, where the Segerstrom family once grew lima beans, the Orange County Museum of Art prepared to unveiled its new home with some sneak peeks at the $94 million, world-class building designed by global architectural firm Morphosis. Inside, floating bridges connect different levels and spaces like something out of a modern Hogwarts castle, and a glass-enclosed education pavilion with stadium seating (“You have never been in a classroom like this,” said Brandon Welling, partner-in-charge of the project for Morphosis) will be the site for talks, films and lectures.

During the 24-hour party starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 8, there will be dancing, art-making, movies, fireworks, and even — if you can make it to 3 a.m. — fortune-telling and tarot-card-reading in the galleries themselves.

Back in Huntington Beach, the Pacific Airshow roared to a start at the end of the month. The aerial performers came from near and far to wow the crowds. Among the pilots taking to the sky over the weekend was Matt Hall, former top gun fighter pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force and reigning Red Bull Air Race World Champion.

President of Lyon Air Museum Mark Foster said the show allows the museum to showcase gems such its B-25 Mitchell bomber used during World War II.

Seeing some of the new, sleek military jets is a larger-than-life experience, but also including the vintage planes is a chance to educate the younger generation about the aircraft of the past. They may even be inspired, Foster said, whether they are into math or engineering or flying the planes – many paths can lead to the sky.
