We asked our photographers to pick their favorite moments from October 2022, and here are some they selected.

Animals, art, politicians and costumes – that pretty much sums up October in Orange County.

For Catholics, Oct. 4 is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, commemorating the 12th-century friar who founded the Franciscan orders and is the patron saint of animals and ecology. For students at Saint Francis of Assisi School in Yorba Linda, it’s a day to bring their pets to school for a blessing.

The Orange County Museum of Art’s 24-hour opening celebration partied into the night and all day Sunday, Oct. 9. Fireworks capped the event after hours of celebrating the arts with tours of the museum, musical performances among its galleries and visitors getting hands-on making their own art.

The new $94 million home of the museum, which focuses on contemporary, modern art, much of it from California artists, is now open to the public at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. Admission will be free for the next decade.

Over in Santa Ana, artists at the Orange County School of the Arts showed off their faux pumpkins as part of the annual Painted Pumpkin auction.

In Irvine, while the Great Park Balloon was dressed up as a giant jack-o-lantern, President Biden was speaking about health care at Irvine Valley College.

While Biden spoke, thousands of people clogged the streets around the campus to protest against the killing of Masha Amini, an Iranian woman who was detained for violating dress rules and died in custody in Iran.

On the coast, Huntington Beach held the Moto Beach Classic motorcycle race as hundreds of fans turned out to watch the riders on a makeshift dirt track.

Speaking of tracks, in Costa Mesa, the Orange County Model Engineers unveiled the refurbished Hank Hornsveld Trestle along the 7.5-inch gauge railroad at Fairview Park. The trestle was originally built in 1991 and is part of over 5 miles of track at the Mackerel Flats and Goat Hill Junction Railroad.

Of course, October ended with kids in costumes. Youngsters got a jump on the trick-or-treating before the sun during the annual Cops N’ Goblins event in Buena Park. About 3,000 costumed kids, according to Police Chief Frank Nunes, made their way through the Buena Park Police department’s Cops N’ Goblins on Halloween at the Civic Center. The free event featured trunk or treating with police vehicles, games, food trucks and a costume contest. Hosted by the Buena Park Police Department, Chief Nunes said, “It’s our way of giving back to the community and building trusting relationships”
